Skull and Bones: Ubisoft's follow-up to its most acclaimed game is here, and it's not very good

My kids would get upset at my maniacal cackle when I cracked a ship in twain. I think maybe I was a pirate in a previous life.

That said, as much as I liked Black Flag and Odyssey (and some of the others) they are all still Assassin’s Creed games, which means they have insipid, confusing plots and dense, self contradictory lore weighing them down. That’s why it would have been splendid if this series didn’t have the ancient aliens stuff haunting its every step. There’s an obvious appetite for unique historical open world settings, with lots of player freedom.

It is what it is. I play them and enjoy them as far as it goes, but they aren’t high art and I’m not here to argue the company’s case. If they don’t work for you, don’t waste your time on this earth with them.
