One beekeeper I was reading about, called their charges, “flying kittens”. A lovely name, but I’m still not sleeping with them!

Sexin’ up the ol’ horizontal beehive, huh? I suppose this means that there’s beekeeper porn flying around out there?

Not for me. No thank you.

Y’know, strange though it is, I kinda get this.

Bee hives make a lovely noise and have a very distinctive and pleasant smell. I think it would be a pretty nice experience to sleep on/in one.

Domestic bees are gentle and generally not aggressive. Unless you accidentally squish one. Then all the other bees loose their shit.

Are bees really that active at night, or is this more of an afternoon nap space?
Considering it’s a wooden box with no windows I’m thinking day sleeper.

heh… i may’ve unwittingly discovered this on my own; i would often prefer to sit and read with my back propped up against my most thriving hive. all the calm industry, pervasive buzzing, and even the occasional tired fielders landing on one’s knees just produced a surreal sense of tranquility, (plus that location scared away certain distracting elements [wink])

This feels like a slightly recontextualized piece from a horror movie.

This Summer! YOU WILL EXPERIENCE TERROR LIKE NO OTHER! LOCKED IN A COFFIN FULL OF BEES!!!

Uhhh… sounds like a bad idea. My mother had a beehive in the back yard for a while, and you didn’t really want to do any gardening anywhere near it, because the closer you were, the more likely you were to be stung, seemingly in particular by sick and dying bees fleeing the hive but not able to get very far. There are going to be a fair number of bees sitting on/around the hive, most of the time. (So even if you sealed yourself up, it would be hard to avoid having bees in there with you.) Getting on top of the beehive and causing it to move at all would probably make them rather anxious and sting-y, too.

Actually that would be nice. Mild warmth, gentle vibrations, the smell of fresh beeswax and a hint of honey. The risk of being stung, not so much.

  1. Is there room for two?
  2. How do bees feel about the hive shaking?
