I have actually come across a print like this in the snow. What this picture doesn’t show is the trail of tiny footprints leading up to the “snow angel” and ending there.
To paraphrase Alan Moore, badly, most people tend to forget that owls are birds of prey.
Me, I’m usually reminded of an old song.

I love that you can even see the musculature of the owl’s wings impressed into the snow.
From the deep hole, I suspect the pitter-pattering was going on below the snow.
To all the little critters and rodents, though, this is probably viewed as a snow devil.
Indeed.
We had a barred owl move into the neighborhood about two years ago. While I love falling asleep to its hooting, it also means no more bunny outdoor time once dusk falls.
Gotta respect the neighbors.

You can see the hole where the talons and legs went. It might have heard the prey under the snow.
If you look down from any ski lift on the early runs of the day after new snow, you can see these “death angel” prints.
