I saw Beau of the Fifth Column make a point which applies here: if you want to look like a tough guy, then don’t pick fights with old men.

If you win, then, wow: you successfully beat up an old man. That doesn’t make you look tough, that makes you look like a bully and a coward. Because, you know, you are one.

If you lose, then congratulations: you tried to beat up an old man, and you failed, how tough do we feel now?.

Also: welcome to BoingBoing, comrade!

Also, turning off your bodycam when there’s no reason other than to prevent a record of what you’re about to do: immediate termination.

Do cops just assume that nobody ever looks at the footage? Cuz the stuff they do while the cam is turned on makes me shudder to think of what they do when it’s turned off.

  • we can’t get him convicted of a crime

  • we can’t get him fired

  • even if we could get him fired, an “arbitrator” would decide we can’t fire him after all

  • but maybe some vaguely defined certifying authority will exert its obscure bureaucratic powers to do everybody else’s job for us

The cop lost the argument the moment he justified detaining the guy for being “rude”. AFAIK there is no law against being rude.

Imagine how bad off this poor guy had to be for jailers–who as a rule seem to be perfectly content with letting people starve, give birth, and/or die in a cell–to actually refuse to take him.
