Star Trek fans use FaceApp to swap genders of franchise characters

Well… we’ll see. Twenty years ago I was told all kinds of things about “what will be happening in 10 years” and “in my lifetime” by people who liked to talk big and thought life was a science fiction novel… Virtually none of it has happened yet. So understandably, I’m incredibly skeptical about futurist predictions.

Two thoughts…

First, what’s the point of “deep fake” nudes I’ve heard people have seen on the inter-tubes? What’s the point of seeing^h^^h^h^h^h^h hearing about an obviously fake photo with a favoured actor’s face faked onto a fully nude body. Done well enough such that one might take some pleasure of seeing it as if it were “really” them?

I understand the pleasure of seeing the not-supposed-to-be-seen and all. I’m pretty sure we all do.
But the fake “it” ain’t “it”.

Second, if the holodeck exists, there must be something that prevents continuous use. Too costly, too power-hungry, too few devices to go around. Otherwise who the hell would ever leave?

Sometime around 15-20 I realized nearly every girl / woman I was attracted to and / or dating sorta looked like her mom, but also her dad, and brothers / sisters, too. I remember this being ultra freaky at first, but then I realized it was fine as I matured. As I got older, I realized there are a lot of distinct things about people you are with for awhile that you end up missing a lot, later on, that are so distinct you know you won’t see them again.

The Holodeck was the worst thing on TNG, and sucks. Because when your show is SET ON AN INTERGALACTIC STARSHIP, having your cast constantly trudge down to the basement to fuck around in the Holodeck is weak, lazy writing.

Oh, and the pictures ar funny and cute. But meaningless. Hey, like the Holodeck!

Riker’s character-defining smeaziness (smarm+sleaze) shines through. It’s impressive, really.

Well except for when they use it as a simulator for solving technical problems, or as a training environment. But using it to lark about dressed as Robin Hood or as 1940’s detectives is certainly a waste or resources.

I’m more impressed with how well the “AI” does with the mapping and tracking. I see the occasional one that looks completely believable it terms of movement and editing. I think that’s the impressive part, not the actual face on a different body concept. I mean it’s 2020…with the absurd levels of nudity and porn on the internet I don’t really need to see “inset famous person here” naked.

I think DS9 and Voyager touched on this. Quark’s holosuites were shut down on multiple occasions to conserve power. The same issue arose in Voyager. I believe it is “The Killing Game” episode. The Hirogen take over Voyager and basically expand the size of the holodeck but they run into several power and size constraints.

I think power is your primary issue, coupled with the theoretical way it would work, you would need serious resources to run a 24/7 holodeck. I think the main issue when you are dealing with multiple people in a holodeck is the division of space. You can’t really cram a holodeck full of people and magically place them into a vast city, there isn’t enough space separation to make that function correctly.

I’d also wager that Star Fleet has outlawed or at least frowns on neural implants. It’s an interesting side to science fiction, but it doesn’t really have a solid place in the larger story of Star Trek.

In the same vein as gender swapping, I think the premise in Altered Carbon (Netflix) is fantastic.

I mean when it takes 3 or 4 episodes for you to figure out who is who from the last season you know they are working on a solid sci-fi formula. (Plus you almost have the British style of ever changing characters / actors in a show. From an American stand point I find it weird when characters just drop out of a show but then new ones show up. Here you just have new actors same characters…)

Actually, not a holodeck episode… it was a Q episode… with Vash no less. Picard romance!

Objection.

Even if it were used purely for entertainment, why would you think this is a waste of resources?
You are sitting in a tin box, outside it is cold, the next human beings outside of your own tin are so far away that you need a degree in math to even begin to comprehend how far.

Because in the future, we’re going away with leisure! :woman_shrugging: More efficient that way!

You are correct! Perhaps the Barkley episode where he fantasizes about being a Musketeer, with Troi as his muse, would be more in line.

Because I was being disagreeable

But yes, there are certainly human needs to think of that the holodeck could help with. I was going to calculate how much time each crewmembers would be rationed, but no need! That’s why we have Reddit.

Creepy! I can’t believe Troi kept treating him and didn’t get out a restraining order on Lt. Broccoli!

Thanks for that! I have admit I’ve seen all the episodes of the shows you mentioned, but beyond a few details (like “sleeves” in Altered Carbon), it’s all gone.

On the plus side, lots of great TV to re-watch now! Given my personal prediction, we’re heading for another lockdown soon, so all good!
