Star Trek is returning to network television

& @Garymon - they tried to bridge the gap, remember Enterprise? As much as I want them to fill in the pieces I’m not sure people care enough (or rather, I’m not sure there’s enough fans to make that audience).

My hazy memory says it was pre starfleet/warp travel days.

Oh! Have you guys seen this?

It must have been posted on BB before now, but it’s great!

I love Star Trek. But redoing it yet again just makes me want to throttle TV executives. There are SO many sf books and series out there that could be turned into a series or miniseries, it make me choke. OR come up with something completely different that is as good now as STTOS was back in the '60s.

Midshipman’s Hope. The Lost Fleet by Jack Campbell. Something by Joe Haldeman. The McAndrews Chronicles or the Proteus stories by Charles Sheffield.

Or the Vorkosigan Saga. Bujold has a what? 200+ year future history that would translate well, IMO. Neat background, amazing societies, well-thought out scientific fun, and great characters.

At least they’re doing the Expanse. I hope they do it well.

Oh, well, end of rant.

That’s a little funny, because of all the Star Trek series, DS9 was the one where the characters grew and changed the most. There’s pretty much no change in the characters in TOS or TNG from start to finish, but watching DS9 all the way through and then returning to a first season episode is jarring. DS9 did go somewhere, and it’s the most important vector of all.

But what makes old Star Trek fans upset is that the audience seems to want flash (literally as well as figuratively, given the sets and lens flares) instead of moral dilemmas and cultural allegory. Before we had Star Wars for the id and Star Trek for the super-ego. Now it’s all id. JJ Abrams Star Trek is Star Wars.

I hear what you are saying. I could easily imagine the core audience not liking it because it is too different from the tone of previous shows but I could also see them really get into living the lore and watching the universe they love so much take form. It could also bring in new people that never took to the original shows.

I’m not sure about the timeline either but I like the idea of including Kahn. I went to do some research on when Earth first encountered aliens since that could be an exciting time and could include aliens but as @Missy_Pants called out below they already did a prequel called Enterprise which I had missed entirely until just now. Sounds like it caused people to freak out because it was too different. That’s too bad.

I think I must have been in one of my anti-TV/Cable phases when Enterprise came out. Never heard of it until you mentioned it. I will give it a watch if I can find it on Hulu/Netflix/Prime. Thank you.

I am in season 4 of DS9 for the first time. I like Jadzia a fair bit, but I find Kira annoying as heck.

There’s also the Star Trek: The Animated Series, from the 1970s. Most of the original cast provided the voices. They had some decent writers.

Sadly it also featured the first holodeck on the Enterprise with of course the first holodeck malfunction.

Hey, that’s a great idea. How about the story of a comparatively primitive ship and its smaller crew making first contact with some of these beloved races for the first time (The Andorians! The Orions! The Klingons!), before the Federation even existed.

After Space Al Qaeda, it was never the same.

It’s on Amazon Prime. Unless CBS starts playing hardball.

I watched the animated series growing up but I can’t recall a single episode off hand. I should go back and re-watch one of these days.

Thank you!

Some of those were pretty good. I liked the one where the ship finds a planet of ex-Borg types. Disconnected, but liable to get re-assimilated. They get the Voyager crew to get them some magic Borg gizmo, but instead of finally freeing themselves they form their own collective.

And all 10 people who subscribe to CBS All Access can enjoy it.

The rest of us will be pirates.

I don’t know that “Enterprise” was too different, it just wasn’t terribly good.

I had a game with my spouse of the time. Just by watching the pre-credits segment, I could always tell what the story was, and even how it would resolve. It was so predictable for me that I literally didn’t even need to watch it. We’d discuss what we thought was happening/going to happen. Eventually I’d just write my predictions for reading after the episode, as not to spoil it. (I also wore shitake mushrooms in my hair as Andorian antennae)

It’s hard to have a series about exploration, yet rely upon formula.

It’s not bad… I like a lot what they were doing. But it wasn’t “Star Trek” it was a submarine in space, which makes sense. Also they did an evil universe mini run that was amazing. BUT the theme song was sooooo bad. Like screaming running to mute the TV bad on the first note bad. Seriously just so bad. Which is a shame as all the others series had lovely opening songs. (Voyager is my fave in that regard too.) But it got cancelled in the 4th season I think? Which is a shame. If I remember correctly there were plans for spin offs. To fill the gaps.

The one where Tom Paris flies a shuttle at Warp 10 and mates with the captain was pretty good.

I have a hard time watching shows with a strong formula. Same problem, if I can see the pattern easily a show just isn’t fun to watch. Sometime in the mid nineties I gave up on TV as a medium and just watched movies. Eventually shows like Lost, Battlestar Galactica and Soprano’s pulled me back.

I will check it out. Not sure how far I will make it based on what I read so far but I have nerd shame for not even knowing it existed. Must make penance.
