Looks like a 12-string mandolin with a differently shaped body, but IANAL (I am not a luthier).

I can hardly believe Steve Miller is 80 next month (and I’ve been listening to him for 45+ years, so I should believe it).

It’s a short scale 12-string guitar. His left-hand fingering is standard guitar chording, not mandolin chords.

I’ve never seen one of those either, short scale guitars are pretty common but I’ve never seen a 12-string version.

I’ve heard he’s a workaholic, and spends hours doing vocal drills to keep his range as he ages, this video seems to prove it.

I believe he is playing a version of this. You can see the name Veillette on the headstock.
