Sunlight is the Best Disinfectant

Hmmm, i guess if you keep wanting little enough, it won’t be hard at some point to satisfy your desires.

I think so. If someone is going to say racist, fascist things, I certainly don’t want them to be controlling who gets to hear their message. If they are, they can opt to speak honestly only to their devout followers while the rest of us remain in the dark about their true opinions and goals. Until it’s too late.

Long, long ago like in the 1970s, there was a push to downplay the media coverage of serial killers and their ilk so as to reduce the number of copycats. Not sure it ever worked, either at reducing coverage or killings. That push might be behind some of the calls to stop giving more attention to the likes of MTG. Alas, it really is necessary to call attention to those who left reality and yet managed to become elected officials.

Rudy can talk all day long for all I care, I just wish people would stop paying him any mind.

ETA (after having post moved from a different discussion): OK point taken! I just feel like Rudy is “case closed,” thoroughly proven who he is. He’s old news, I’d like his legacy to remain “washed up”

How you do it matters.

The news media frequently just amplifies right wing lies and hate speech by quoting it in their headlines, and almost always without explanation or negation.

Humans are subject to biases, such as the “availability heuristic”, which is that we tend to assume things we hear the most often are true, which is part of why the Nazi “big lie” propaganda worked, and why Trump’s propaganda works. It’s vital for the media to stop just transcribing right wing lies and hate. Why these people are wrong and horrible has to be the headline, not their wrong and horrible statements.

Surprise surprise indeed, but do you really need to give Rogan more oxygen by linking to him? I don’t need to be seeing his punchable ballbag of a face every time I go online, it’s getting absurd.

Why do that when you can post about it and derail the conversation? /s

just stop covering everything he does, and maybe he’ll finally just go away.

From Cory’s newsletter today re: the latest Swiss banking leak.

The friend who emailed me about this wrote, “After so many of these, I am accepting that these leaks don’t matter, and that those in power don’t actually want to fix the system. Sunlight isn’t doing any disinfecting at all.”

He’s not wrong, but that’s not the whole story.

The problem isn’t the transparency , it’s the inaction .

So perhaps we should be emphasising (as many here already do) that sunlight is only the first step in the disinfecting process.

Removal from interaction- a time out - works for children as you can control their environment. That doesn’t apply to adults or to open online settings.

Also - the kids can’t harm people as a response to being sent to their rooms.

Argh, I wish (actual) news organizations would simply stop publishing whatever insanity he’s spouted recently. He’s no longer president. The only way he has of getting to a larger audience than Fox watchers is when he says something insanely stupid and news orgs feel it is newsworthy due to its bonkersness. Stop. Just stop.

The problem is, they respected his opinion looong before he was president.

ETA: Not sure why my post keeps “replying” to @gracchus, and not @zoidberg . :man_shrugging:

Yeah but he’s gearing up to run.

And he has a rather heavily armed fan base who actually stormed the capital.

Coverage could be much better. But ignoring it won’t make it go away.

As goes this. This pro-Russia line is remarkably unpopular with the general population, and even the GOP base.

I’ve seen polls where the “Russia good” option is like 4%.

There’s a midterm coming up and most of the right is on running a “weak on Russia” tack. While Trump and his preferred candidates are stanning for Putin hard.

That’s actually important news.

Quick note to both you and @Ryuthrowsstuff that I have alerted the Discourse team to this potential bug.

Why is it that every time her face falls open and noise comes out somebody feels like it should be shared? Around any herd of elephants tremendous, disgusting farts may be heard but they aren’t at all worth comment.
