I know how it works in some places. I am saying it is fucking stupid.
Important to note this is not just happening in conservative states. Here in Maryland, a Democratic voting bastion, my wife had to remove her Pride flag after the notorious right-wing piece of shit who keeps running (and thankfully losing) for school board bitched about it when her (very embarrassed by her mother to be clear) child was in my wife’s class. Administrators always bend over for the conservatives, and it disgusts me. No one stands up to these folks and says “enough is fucking enough.”
Be careful going through Alberta. They’ve got their share of kooks.
Neosho really is the armpit of Missouri.
I’ll take Canadian kooks over USA looks anytime anywhere.
I suspect that a lot of the “OMG propaganda turning the children gay!” people are just in it as a cynical exercise in making up reasons to attack symbols they don’t like; along with a helping of the position that if someone is kept firmly in the closet they can be treated as non-gay for the purposes of people who actually matter; but I still can never shake some doubt as to whether people who think that a pride flag on the wall (or even a slick, media savvy, full spectrum propaganda campaign) can actually turn people gay actually have personal experience with being heterosexual.
On the Pod Save America podcast a little while back the hosts had a great description of “moderates” vs. “centrists.” I don’t remember their exact description, which was better than my summary, but basically for moderates they generally have an agenda and core values that they want to enact but are willing to negotiate and compromise (sometimes too much) in order to get what they can, whereas for avowed “centrists” (Kirsten Sinema being a prime example) publicly taking a “center” position on any given issue is the whole goal, rather than the means to a goal. No matter where the Overton window shifts, and what their own earlier stated values were on any given issue, a centrist will always stake out a position right in the middle.
Maybe they’re just really into the study of non-domesticated felines?
Some of them do, for sure. Some don’t really care if it’s possible, they just want everyone acting and behaving straight regardless. Enough prayer, shaming, emotional and physical abuse and yeah, it’s possible to damage a child so profoundly that they will appear to conform.
Agreeing with you Mongrove, just elaborating, because I’m always angry. To your point, in response to Mister44, it’s possible to brutalize someone into acting straight.
Having walked down the Way of Human Rights just last week, I can confirm that there is a middle of the road of human rights .
Of course that is the only meaning in which their expression makes sense. Otherwise it would be a horrible thing for someone in the education field to say.
The top halves or the bottom halves?
My union fought for our right to display/wear Black Lives Matter posters/shirts, and then made us all a shirt. I plan to wear it at least once a week all school year. I already have a pride flag and safe space poster, but I feel an oncoming need to make an entire bulletin board with pride and equity themes.
But after the CRT and Covid nonsense, and you know, miserable work conditions, constant threat of gun violence, disrespect, and low pay, I totally understand someone saying enough is enough.
Having grown up near there, I can attest that they are not a minority in any way. The minority (liberal) population runs far, far away the second they graduate.
My version of this has been:
We say “2 + 2 = 4”
They say “2 + 2 = 5”
The ‘neutrals’ say “why not compromise on 2 + 2 = 4½”
And yet it persists. Sigh.
I like the cut of your kitten jib, my friend.
I live in central New Jersey. It ain’t any better here.
Yep. We started the whole country with compromises on who count as human beings, and only have marginally improved ever since.
