While you may mean well, please don’t do this. stop making these. stop putting the words child molester next to a “man in a dress” photo

Fair 'nuff.

(Point being for those now without context due to deletion, all of the child molesters I hear about are cis men that have zero trouble walking into the “right” bathroom- whatever that means.)

I went to the hearing on the Minnesota bathroom bill, which was stupid on many levels. Among them was that there were actual real problems that needed fixed, like Minnesota changing rooms being recently ruled public places for photography, that the bill wouldn’t have addressed at all, since it was lazily copy-pasted from some national think tank.

But as for the whole predator argument: the bill supporters were at least pretty well coached to say that they weren’t scared of trans people, but only cis predators pretending to be trans. Essentially: all trans people must suffer restrictions because of the existence of some bad cis people, and obviously we can’t pass laws that might adversely affect cis people, so trans people will have to deal. This is a familiar social conservative argument, see also: women must suffer because of some bad men, but we can’t negatively impact men at all, so…

Anyway, to make cis people feel they wouldn’t be even slightly inconvenienced, the bill spelled out a whole list of exceptions. One result being, if a lot of these fake trans bathroom predators actually existed, after the bill passed they could simply change tactics to fake emergencies that precluded running to, or waiting for, the other bathroom. It’s probably way easier to fake “I thought the other room was too full / far away and I really had to go.”

— actual rant starts here —

The whole prejudiced nature of the enterprise always outs itself: the social power structure perceives a “problem” that could perhaps maybe sorta possibly be addressed by stomping on the powerless, but not wanting to inconvenience itself bakes in its own privileges so that the unprivileged become associated with the “problem” and locked up while the privileged abusers go free. See also, the war on drugs.

— end rant —

I wish you were only speaking metaphorically but, sadly, I know you’re not. Transgender people face terrible violence on a regular basis, and four years ago during a push for similar bills a Tennessee state legislator made clearly violent threats against transgender people.

I’ve brought up this story several times because I want to remind people of just how pervasive the thinking that transgender people, or even anyone whose appearance seems different, get what they deserve for not “conforming to society’s norms”.

Then again maybe I don’t need to remind anyone here since at least one individual in this thread has already very clearly expressed that view.

“… would have an easier time of it if they were so … different.”

Ms. Sorkowitz was referring to two wonderfully “abnormal” children, but the idea applies just the same.

I have after a fashion, and I share your sentiment. It’s a feckin’ miracle that our species is still here, considering the overwhelming surplus of stupidity.

No matter who actually said it, it sadly seems to be quite true.
