I’m assuming this

(I don’t believe Evan McMullin is going to get 22% of the vote)
I’ve been surprised Trump’s been as strong in UT as he has up to this point, he’s basically a pure embodiment of everything Mormons detest, though Johnson’s been really strong there, and many seem to be hoping for McMullin to be president of The United States of Utah.
Slacktivist covered this a few days ago: Mormons out-Baptist-ing the Baptists.
Deseret News op-ed: Trump should resign candidacy
Beginning paragraphs:
For 80 years, the Deseret News has not entered into the troubled waters of presidential endorsement. We are neutral on matters of partisan politics. We do, however, feel a duty to speak clearly on issues that affect the well-being and morals of the nation.
Accordingly, today we call on Donald Trump to step down from his pursuit of the American presidency.
Yeah, 538’s numbers look really off to me for Utah.
Is it terrible I want the democrats to have a similar fracturing? Destroy both large parties and see how all the little splinter groups flounder or float in a climate designed to prop the largest up while excluding everyone else.
Wow. I really like that sidebar at the end.
The title of this post references the “Flushing Remonstrance” — which is a very cool slice of American history. In 1657, long before the United States became its own nation, this document embodied the ideal of freedom of conscience that would later be written into our Constitution. And long before New Amsterdam transformed into New York City, it also embodied the idea that let that place become one of the greatest cities on earth.
Basically, the governor of the then-Dutch colony wanted to keep out the Quakers. New Yorkers, acting like New Yorkers, told the governor what he could do with that law. They stood up for the freedom of conscience not just for Quakers, but for the “Presbyterian, Independent, Baptist” as well — and for “Jews, Turks and Egyptians” and all other “sonnes of Adam.”
So when some rich guy from right there in Queens tries, 359 years later, to bar Turks and Egyptians and whoever else he doesn’t like, that rich guy richly deserves a remonstrance of his own. Surprisingly, it’s coming partly from the Latter Day Saints — a religious tradition nearly two centuries younger than the Flushing Remonstrance.
The author is right: that is a really cool slice of American history.
I know, right?
This is interesting too. Explains why that LA Times survey always favours Trump:
Alternately, it’s just the way his ears work. Maybe this loss will give him a chance to reflect and develop some humility.
It’s plural for a reason.
Note that my state doesn’t change color… despite being politically dominated by rich white men, it stays Democrat…
I’m disrupting the acceptable narrative again, aren’t I? Sorry!
Meh, neither does any of the West Coast. It’s not about political domination, just demographics.
Chiefly, though, Trump’s fortunes rest on his core supporters, white men who lack a four-year college degree, an economically stressed and socially and politically conservative group. He leads Clinton among them by 76-17 percent, an enormous 59-point advantage.
Just responding to your comment.
In my state, it’s primarily economic, and only secondarily racial or gender demographics. The wealthy are voting Democrat, regardless of their own party affiliation or race or gender, of the middle class only the NRA ultra-extremists (all five of them!) are voting Republican now that the Christian fundies have bailed out, and of the poor only the white males are voting Republican. Since the poor are mostly not white males, well…
Split the state up by race or gender as you please, we stay blue.
Moore & Trump deserve each other.
