When I watched Swiss Family Robinson as a kid I never understood why the girl they rescued from the Pirates had been disguised to look like a boy. Ah, the naivety of youth.

There is another Futility Closet podcast about “The Lieutenant Nun”-- a 14-year-old nun (she never completed her vows, so not really a nun) who ran away, disguised herself as a boy, and rose through the ranks of the Spanish army in the New World. Amazingly, a lot of her story can be verified with documents of the era, although it sounds too much like a movie script to believe.
