This reminds me of something I noticed in the artistsâ bios for the most recent opera. I realize that the artists themselves create their bios, but there is an editor who could suggest changes before publication. Anyway, all of the opera singers put where they were from in their first sentence, which means you get a lot of âAmerican mezzo sopranoâ or âAmerican tenorâ, but then also the countries of origin for singers from around the world. In that context, having one of the singers listed as âa soprano from Puerto Ricoâ struck me as very backward. It made it seem like PR was a foreign country. Why not âan American singer born in Puerto Ricoâ?
