The [food item] that we know today are a surprisingly modern invention, coming into their own in the late 19th and early 20th centuries
It’s amazing how often this is true. Even many of the things we think of as core cultural-identity foods only really came into existence thanks to modern distribution and food processing technologies, or as parts of food trends they indirectly brought about.
