I thought this was Honey Boo Boo all growed up.
The representation vs. qualifications thing is so racist itself. Like there isn’t a qualified Asian American woman or a qualified Native American woman or, or, or. To paraphrase Chris Rock: “Do you think Barack Obama was the first black man who was qualified to be president?”
There are extremely few things in this world where we can actually determine who is the most qualified to do them. Pretty much just track and field events. The idea that Megan McCain (or anyone else on the View) is not as replaceable as car parts is pure arrogance. I don’t say that to put any of them down, it’s just a fact that there’s a list hundreds of people long who could sub in tomorrow for any of them and it would take about a week for people to stop caring.
I always thought the dumbest thing John McCain did was to select Sarah Palin as his VP selection. I stand corrected.
Yeah, the one on the right has it going on.
I’ll get back to ya when I manage to wrap my head around that idea.
I do hate the term, but for republicans at least its hard to disagree with there being an inherited ruling class
Megan McCain’s grandfather was a famous admiral, her father was initially known simply for being the admiral’s son (he did make his own way much more than her), she is famous for being her father’s daughter.
If you look at successful republicans more generally, the past 3 R presidents were all trading on their fathers’ influence: Trump was purely a product of his father’s money and name. GW Bush was a factor purely because of daddy Bush whose connections came from his father the senator. The same is true of most of their losing candidates: Jeb, Mittens, McCain.
Ms. McCain seems so dangerously underqualified that she’d probably need to have “born on third base; thinks she hit a triple” explained because she doesn’t know enough about baseball to understand the analogy.
did we forget to mention her grandfather and great-grandfather were both admirals
Americans like to deny that classes exist. This is folly.
It’s actually more like a caste system, given the relative lack of social mobility over the years.
There are the Kennedys on the D side, re: political dynasties, but they seem to be petering out. The Bush family seems to be R version of the Kennedys, but they seem to be (hopefully) on the wane as well. Each generation seems less effective than the preceding. This is good.
The Ruling Class in this country is largely hidden from view & is vanishingly small.
What about Ted Cruz?
What about him?
He’s a steaming pile of shit, but he had no choice in what face he was born with. Everything else about him is his own damn fault, including and especially being so universally unlikeable. But if the face he was born with is what we judge him on, how are we any better than them?
She’s only “progressive” in that she opposes the radical right as presented by the Trumpists. She’s still a conservative with conservative views and talking points. Hence the whole lie about qualifications and diversity. We all know she is horribly unqualified for her position and only earned it because of her name. I can think of a dozen minority female journalists for local television stations offhand who have her beat in qualifications for daytime talk show.
But can she do the time warp?
It’s astounding
Time is fleeting
Madness takes its toll
But listen closely
Not for very much longer…
The “qualifications” discussion is weird. Her job is to be filmed by a television camera in such a way that people watch advertisements. She’s been doing that job for four years and mostly people have watched the ads at about the same rate as before she took the job. If anything the degree to which she has been controversial has to be appealing to advertisers in that she gets attention without it being so negative that people call for boycotts etc. There’s nothing in the job description that has anything to do with intellectual achievements or political acumen.
This is not to say that an AAPI individual might not do the job better. So her actual question is an interesting one. If you have a workforce that is less than diverse, is it appropriate to actually remove current job-holders to replace them with more diverse people? What are the circumstances in which it is appropriate? It certainly seems to me that it is appropriate in situations where the current job holders are a large factor in maintaining the lack of diversity.
It seems like it would be a very anti-labor position to say that employers should always be seeking to replace their current employees with someone more qualified.
But that’s not what US Sen. John McCain’s daughter is claiming in that discussion. She’s implying very much the opposite, that she’s more than a mere television personality. She’s not, though.
It is if a diverse workplace is a priority for the company. This isn’t often the case, but for a television network trying to appeal to the widest possible audience it might be.
The idea of producers taking the opportunity to replace someone whose job is to be filmed by a television camera in such a way that people watch advertisements with someone else who can connect with a new demographic by being on-camera and – as a bonus – is doing more than just pretending they’re an intellectually accomplished political expert … that idea probably has led to some sleepless nights for US Sen. John McCain’s daughter. It definitely inspired her rant here.
That’s one of the dictates of any workplace – capitalist or socialist – that actually wants to accomplish things and excel. The role of good-faith labour organising – which has its roots in guild craftsmanship – is to make sure that management doesn’t abuse that goodwill in the name of self-destructive greed, corner-cutting, and personal vendettas.
What is this “TV” thing you are all on about? Do I need to get one?
Would she be OK with The View being hosted by only Caucasians?
If so, then why care if there are two Asians on the show?
What exactly are the qualifications for being on a TV talk show anyway? We all have opinions and we can all communicate them (or most of us anyway)-- is there a quiz you have to pass, or some kind of game show maze with water hazards and cartoon gladiators to fight?
