Senator’s daughter is one.
It’s a tv show. The qualifications are “get people to watch”. For whatever reason, these kinds of shows tend to be representative, people like to watch people like themselves having the same debates they do.
It’s rich that she’s complaining about identity politics when her qualifications are “suburban Orange County women can identify with her”
I attended a small, exclusive Detroit-area private school (on a scholarship) with kids named Ford, Dodge, Holley, Dow, and Fisher. Very few lived up to their names.
Only if you plan on getting all Elvis on it.
Is it the same school Mittens attended?
No. I wish I’d gone to Cranbrook!
Four Marches ago my BF and I attended an Edward Gorey exhibition at their art museum with 3 dear friends of ours. University-Liggett never woulda had anything like that, even if they had a museum.
Yikes. At least you don’t have to spend any time around those people anymore (I hope)!
[edt] Cranbrook definitely has a lovely campus, and the museum is pretty nice. I must agree!
The whole representation vs. qualifications thing also conveniently ignores the fact that pushes for diverse representation are in part an effort to combat a system where white people, especially white men, benefit from their identities, regardless of their qualifications (45 being perhaps the most egregious recent example).
If someone managed to overcome a horrifically racist, sexist, transphobic, homophobic system and be eligible for a position, that should be a feather in their cap over whatever lily-white dipshit tries to coast into a position on privilege or straight-up-nepotism. (And I say this as a lily-white dipshit who undoubtedly benefits from unjust privileges.)
From my history of watching TV news and talk shows, networks have never had a problem removing women, POC, or older show hosts in an attempt to reach a different demographic or boost ratings. Their only “qualification” was a certain look - and it wasn’t diverse at all. The poster for the movie Bombshell reflects that.
There has been pushback when more qualified people (based on experience, training, etc.) have been replaced by charming airheads, but management gets what it wants. Your use of the word “appropriate” jumped out at me, because this is also an industry that manages to retain a great number of people who would have been fired for inappropriate behavior in other corporate settings. So, given that was never an issue before, I find it interesting when concerns are raised now, when the pendulum is swinging in a direction that better reflects the diversity most of us see in the world.
Reminds me of people freaking out when RBG said the acceptable number of women on the Supreme Court was 9, and her response that nobody thought it was unfair when they were all men.
I don’t personally imagine myself capable of communicating my opinions in a personable charming way in front of a television audience. Not everybody is very likeable. (But then there was that whole TV era where these shows were dominated by the likes of Charles Krauthammer and John McGlaughlin so maybe that isn’t a requirement after all.)
She ain’t no senator’s son.
Thought exercise: What car part is she?
I’m thinking “blinker juice”.
She’s a republican, so she might be a starting hand crank.
