Absolutely spot on, and one of the best features of the movie, nothing shakes his perception that he’s the Hero.

Well, to be fair, the 1951 version was The Thing From Another World. And the Carpenter movie hews much more closely to Campbell’s short story, so I understand @SamWinston 's point.
That said, The Last Remake of Beau Geste, despite very obvious departures from the source text, is still technically a remake, and so is Carpenter’s The Thing, unlike the identically-titled sequel from a couple years ago.
True, Jack is not the hero but he does have exceedingly good reflexes as evidenced by a scene early in the movie where he catches the bottle that Wang fails to cut in half and also SPOILER: the Lo Pan death scene near the end. No idea how he got so good at knife throwing though!
