I saw this trailer the other night… it looks absolutely beautiful and very sweet!

Finally, animation that’s not trying to look like either Pixar or anime.
That’s a weird thing to say about anime, though. It’s not like there is a universal style in anime… it just describes Japanese animation. I mean… there is a lot of diversity there:
There are some shared stylistic choices across studios, but not nearly as coherent as with Pixar…
A marvelous selection of styles. Some of my favorites in there, for sure.
Here is some Ghost in the Shell and Princess Mononoke for good measure:
Agreed that there is a huge variation in anime style, but it is almost always based in Japanese culture (you have to know your audience to do well)
Well, sure but like almost any other culture, there is a lot of variation there. And of course, it’s the national animation industry, so of course they center themselves. It’s also become one of their most successful exports since the 2000s… so, unsurprisingly, we’ve started to see that influence here (Avatar and Boondocks being two high profile examples). I think when people who aren’t familiar with anime think of it, they think it’s just characters with big eyes, the primary audience being children, and it’s action-adventure oriented stories, with a strong grounding in fantasy… but there is pretty much every genre is represented, and the audience can be pretty much anyone depending. We get a lot more here than we used to (thanks in part to Crunchyroll and other streamers embracing anime).
But part of why anime has gotten so big in the west is because of that diversity, which people managed to get even back in the day via fan-subbed bootlegs. It’s turned into the big business it is because of that diversity… it’s something for everyone, frankly. Just like hollywood, to be honest.
I agree that there’s a world to discover in anime, but it is, for better or worse, through the lens of Japanese culture and people of Japanese providence. Leave the idea that it’s bad or good aside, I’m not arguing that. All I am saying is that this won’t be through that lens (and I don’t know if that is a good thing).
Sure, I get that… I’m just saying that Japanese culture is pretty diverse (like any national culture)… it’s not as coherent as Pixar’s style, for that reason… There is also the general problem of western orientalism, which flattens out that complexity. I’d argue that the OP’s (that I was replying to) wholesale rejection of anime as a uniform style is a bit of that… likely out of ignorance of just how diverse anime actually is stylistically.
Oh yeah, I think quite a few people think anime is the media that’s been popular enough to be seen outside enthusiast circles… let’s hope it’s ignorance, not malice
Just dont watch the new rick and morty “anime” my god that sucks…
