It doesn’t take much cynicism to allow this being a strong possiblity. When they’re caught, con artists will do things that are unthinkable and disgusting to non-sociopaths in order to to avoid consequences and elicit sympathy: unnecessary wheelchairs and walkers, fake sob-story notes from parents, faked heart attacks and fainting spells in the courtroom, etc.
In any case, there are plenty of pregnant women and new mothers behind bars in America right now for much lesser crimes. Most of them aren’t white and from upper-middle-class backgrounds that gave them the opportunity to get into a top university. Most of them haven’t suckered a nitwit hotel heir into marrying them and getting them pregnant. If they can do the time and raise their kids so can she.

So by the math:
$1 BN in fraud gets you 11 years comes out to about $250,000 per day.
So if I defraud you out of $10,000 I should get about an hour of jail time. I can live with that!
