I wonder if they’re trying to figure out if it’s a small predator they should kill.
Deer will stomp on and kill puppies because they apparently smell just like wolves to them, being 100% genetically related. From videos on YouTube it seems they are confused by housecats, not quite associating them with the bobcats and mountain lions that kill deer but still being pretty wary of them.
The YouTube comments think the licking is due to salt on the fur. Maybe after establishing it’s not a mountain lion cub they go for the salt.
