Theresa May all but certain to become Prime Minister after foe quits

Well, hello. That’s a turn up, innit? Let’s see what the party members do in the vote then, eh? Hopefully, ‘Failed, bratty rebellions? That’s a purgin’.
It’s waaaay past time Tony’s chums fucked right off.

I don’t think that male politicians are expected to sell themselves on the basis of being fathers, either.

Although the last childless (and unmarried) PM was Ted Heath.

And, to be fair to her, Leadsom wasn’t remotely qualified in any other way, either.

Indeed. I’d happily see all the PPE degree holding careeerist shits booted out into the wilderness with the Lib Dems. @daneel’s cheering news gives one some hope, at least.

I’m imagining some deselection might be going on soon. Perhaps a New SNP.

It’s gonna be interfering with my MP’s finely-honed fence-sitting skills, I’ll tell you that.

Well, they kind of are, actually. Honestly I think a bachelor running for US president would be right out. Politicians talk up being good parents and how important their families are all the time. I imagine male politicians are less scrutinized and would probably bear less blame if one of their children turned out to be on drugs or got caught stealing a car or something and at a lower tier an unmarried man would probably be more acceptable than an unmarried woman, but when it comes to top jobs I think having a family is something people get judged on.

Anyway, like I said, I found the remarks themselves pretty tepid. Knowing that May is famously unable to have children (Just found an article from 10 days ago about her “heartbreaking struggle” to have kids) suddenly the remark is cruel.

That’s probably homophobia, at least to some extent.

Again, Heath.

Blair got some shit for his son’s arrest, I guess.

Not really about the children quote. She had exaggerated her banking job from part time assistant to senior management, she was beginning to look like a UKIP mole, and her performance at interview showed that, faced with any difficult questions, she fell back on “I’m a mother!”. She apparently did something similar when she wad interviewed by the backbenchers, and as a result only a subset of the 88 far-right loonies supported her. (@renke will appreciate the significance of the number; it’s not exact but fairly close and is regularly used to avoid obvious godwinning.) Would you want a lightweight as PM in a difficult situation? The was what did for Johnson and Gove, and it explains why Farage is unelectable except in “protest” Euro-election votes which most people don’t understand,
The attempt to do down May with such an obvious gibe basically confirmed the belief that, as used to be said, she suffered from LMF - “lack of moral fibre”.

Oh, I read some other stuff about her and already thought she was a crazy idiot who apparently can’t even do a good fake smile. I was just a little baffled that it seemed like that particular remark was such a big deal. If it was more about her finding a good place to resign before more shit surfaced that would make plenty of sense.

They were very Tory: genteel, yet extremely fucking vicious.

Christ what a sad shower of shits they are. They deserve each other. Pity about the rest of the British. Is there a thing Murdoch hasn’t fucked up yet before he dies?

Although apparently the NEC also decided to stop the recent new members from voting.

I think we’re at the point where the Labour party is totally dysfunctional and no longer fit for purpose. I really can’t see it surviving much longer.

Someone’s after some MPs.

I recall Stewart Lee musing about how there were funny scraping sounds and not-funny scraping sounds, and he wondered if people knew that when they were reading scripts on paper and wondering if the words would be funny when said out loud. I guess I should keep this in mind for saying cruel things too. Sometimes it’s the delivery.

Tiddleywinks and manhole cover pattern collecting.

Normally we give people like him a job as a right wing conservative MP where they can shout, bully, pick on people for their appearance/gender, get drunk, prevent the passage of small bits of progressive legislation, demand a return to 18th century labour laws, call everybody who disagrees with them a communist, but actually do very little damage. When they think they’re about to win something the Party machine arises and crushes them, as just now.
But unfortunately Murdoch wasn’t identified in time at Oxford, he wasn’t admitted to the inner circle (so called), he presumably developed a chip on his shoulder (a well balanced Australian is one with an equal number of chips on each shoulder) and ever since he has been trying to use his noisepapers to (a) upset the Royal Family and (b) punish us for having sent convicts to Australia, instead of behaving like Bone or Cash and shouting insults at Labour members. I think this time he has overreached himself. He famously said that the British government did what he told them but the EU didn’t. I have a feeling that Mrs. May may not answer his calls.

I was kind of simultaneously thinking about the mess that Fox News has made of the US…

Plus everywhere else, as Ian Sinclair (I think) said about television: the problem is that you can’t turn it off. Our discourse is polluted with the stream of piss that Murdoch injects into it. Even if you aren’t buying his awfulness, it’s there for you.

Yup, Gresham’s Law applies to information too.

You do know he started trying to wreck us before he decided to become a US citizen and marry Chinese table tennis players, or whatever it was?

Yeah. The resulting paperwork is going to be literal hell because it comes with a mandatory visit to the auditors…

God I love that.

James Buchanan was a lifelong bachelor and likely gay, according to some historians. That was before the Civil War though, when displays of physical affection between men were common, so who knows?

It’s a toss-up whether we’ll have another bachelor before we have our first avowed atheist.

Ooooh some more on this. We get closer and closer. You folks are gonna have tah lasso us in!

Boeing is to create 2,000 jobs in the UK through a new strategic partnership between the aerospace giant and the UK.

Under the agreement, Boeing has committed to the creation of 2,000 new jobs in the UK and increasing their research & development (R&D) spending.

The agreement includes:

• The construction of a new £100m P-8A operational support and training base at RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland, creating more than 100 new jobs.

• The approval of a further £365m worth of aerospace R&D projects jointly funded by industry and government

• A contract for the UK to purchase nine new Boeing P8 Maritime Patrol Aircraft to protect the UK’s new aircraft carriers. (We knew this).

Also, Amazon is creating another 1,000 jobs in the UK. Remember how little tax they, and Google etc, pay? Some back-scratching going on!
