I hate to be soft on crime, but to me that’s the mugshot of someone who currently regrets the decisions he’s made in life.

I once surprised a guy sleeping in my car when I went out to go to work in the morning. I must have forgotten to lock it. He jumped up - banged his head on the roof - and then ran down the block.

That’s a valid interpretation, albeit one that I personally would adjust somewhat based on the theft and the stabbing.
