I remember a cute comic book we got in Grade 5 all about a group of kids exploring the wonderful future awaiting as it developed the Alberta oil sands…
I’m pretty sure this is the absolute real strategy of the right in the US and it is working really really well on people, or at least on the media, from what I can see. Makes everything so damned confusing and disorienting especially for people who are not online much.
Focus on a social issue and do something completely fucked up like just make it criminal to be gay at all in a school zone or within 100ft of a playground. When people get upset because this is obviously wrong that allows for policies that are directly harmful to children like vaginal checks by school staff to assess gender to be defensible like “oh what… I thought you wanted us to protect children.” Scream about “my body my choice” for mask laws but take away the basic human right to a safe pregnancy so that there can be future generations of people. And if, by chance, some phrase has meaning and value to your “enemies” then take that phrase and use it for literally anything until the word itself is subject to keyword filters and the original stories are suppressed. Same fucking shit every time.
It’s just bullshit manipulation but it works because most people (self very much included) live their lives in a pea fog of patter, memes, disinformation and noise… and being thinking things we react to everything even if we do so imperceptibly to ourselves.
Think of the Conservative Think Tank system as a parody of the university system; a network of “institutes” all founded to support an ideology, whose “scholars” write “reports” and conduct “studies” which surprise! – all re-affirm the correctness of their institute’s ideological premise.
If you’re thinking of “Creation Scientists” whose papers are “peer-reviewed” by other Creationists, you already understand how Think Tanks operate. It also helps to picture a crowd of lunatics clustered together, peeing down each others’ legs.
heatwaves have become less severe
I think they’re aiming that at the US market¹, on the assumption that everyone now associates weird weather with continent-wide super-arctic blizzards.
Because there’s a hot spot over the arctic circle and forced all that cold to slip down over the US for some reason oh wait it’s because the Arctic Ice Cap has melted because of I dunno high latitude heatwaves and shit.
[1] Because, duh, the rest of the world is filled with hungry ghosts and socialists, who don’t deserve nice things like Heritage Foundation propaganda until the Heritage Foundation missionaries, proselytes, and fifth columns have done their jobs.
Pfft. “Facts”. You are you going to believe, all those heatwaves you’ve experienced, or this authoritative thing reminding you of that time you were cold?
I feel like all the media stories about the polar vortex did a really poor job explaining something that’s actually really simple. Cold air stays in place. Warmer air moves. And yeah, even warm Arctic air is still a blizzard once it moves to Texas.
It’s this easy to seize control of someone’s Nexx ‘smart’ home plugs, garage doors
A handful of bugs in Nexx’s smart home devices can be exploited by crooks to, among other things, open doors, power off appliances, and disable alarms. More than 40,000 of these gadgets in residential and commercial properties are said to be vulnerable after the manufacturer failed to act.

The way things have been, I think she’s understating things. The crime wave IS the GOP, not within it.
Yeah, well, the “S” in “IoT” does stand for “safety”.
