We had yard signs in communities just south of us complaining about “Big Solar” wanting to install a solar plant in an old, abandoned farm field. It went in anyway, because obviously anything with “Big” in the name is going to run roughshod over the little guys…
(This was in a fairly red area, of course.)

These statements should be used in court to sue companies that are selling drugs that are license-free like insulin or were developed through public funding by NIH & etc.

More evictions
Finland is seeing an increase in evictions, reports Iltalehti.
Last year the National Enforcement Authority recorded 4,900 evictions, which constitutes a nearly 13 percent rise over 2022.
The figures indicate that eviction filings have swelled by 1,300 since the year 2020, when the number of tenants forced out of properties was the same as almost a decade earlier.
Failure to pay rent was by far the most common cause of eviction. No specific demographic stands out among those evicted, which includes both the young and old, families as well as individuals living alone.
Finland has set itself a goal of eradicating homelessness by 2027.

I do understand his point, cat 5 or cat 6 both means “get the hell out, now.” From that standpoint, there is not much difference. But tracking storms is about more than just convincing folks to scat. The data from adding more precise categorization, not to mention the attempt to drive home the point that no, this is not just more of the same, this is a very different animal. We need more acknowledgment of this fact.

Agreed. I was initially just focusing on the indicators that storms are getting worse because I live in an area that’s not affected in the same way. So his perspective on human behavior during disasters made me consider that side, too. I hope he’s wrong about more people dying as a result.

Republican senators try to outlaw rules that restrict Wall Street’s use of AI
Republican senators are attempting to block the US Securities and Exchange Commission’s proposal to restrict financial investment firms’ use of AI.
On Tuesday, senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Bill Hagerty (R-TN) introduced the Protecting Innovation in Investment Act, which would prohibit the SEC’s rule preventing advisers and brokers from deploying “data analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and similar technologies” in scenarios where there could be a conflict of interest with investors.
SEC chair Gary Gensler previously warned that the latest software tools could allow financial firms to figure out optimal terms and conditions for themselves in negotiations against investors – potentially placing their own interests above others. Cruz and Hagerty, however, believe that preventing the use of AI will hurt investors and prevent them from utilizing the technology to their own benefit.
