This Republican strategist says "members of the Church of Secular Science" wear masks to prove superiority

No problems with that, I have. Un-covid example: a lot of people around here (western central Europe) oppose GM crops because they think they are dangerous, to their health and to the environment. Both fears are not the based on strong scientific evidence. Still, opposition to GMO in agriculture is a good thing, IMO. They chose the wrong hill to die on, but I, for one, would still oppose GMO with them (as long as they aren’t green fascist, that is).

I mostly like your post (Welcome, BTW!) but take a bit of issue with this statement. I think, in contrast, it exhibits empathy for others since masks mostly protect those around the wearers rather than the wearers themselves. That makes the wearing of masks a (mildly) subservient act. It states “my mild discomfort is less important than your safety.” That’s the opposite of feeling superior.

Welcome to boing boing!

Please don’t confuse our worries and our frustrations as feelings of moral superiority.

I don’t enjoy wearing a mask, but my health and my family’s health is more important than meeting someone at where they are on this issue. Quite simply, science is telling us how to prevent transmission of this virus and that is by distancing and masking. Facts are not political even though some people are trying to politicize them. People who won’t wear a mask for pretend reasons are being selfish.

I sometimes respond to being thanked with “Hey, it was quite literally the least I could do.” Because sometimes etiquette compels people to verbally thank others for things that just don’t feel like they warrant being thanked.

To me, not moistening the air with sharasols feels kinda like that sort of thing. It’s just the bare minimum of human decency right now. Therefore I keep the output valve of my respirator covered by thick coffee filter to avoid feeling inferior to the people around me.

Change “Hermetic” to “Hedonistic” and I’m in.

No. Adams is a dick. I – for one – do not welcome his presence in this church.

Ironically, Richard Marx seems okay.

Well, if the mask fits…

The problem is the religious right seem to have chained themselves to corporate republican right. They have decided that ANY republican is far better than even any democrat. In fact the farther right the better. Got to save all those unborn children is the ONE issue for many of them. Such that anyone not promising that is unacceptable, even if their opposition is an obviously godless draft dodging tax evading con man.
As they have chained themselves to this outlook, they have to take the con man’s every word as pure truth. The con man says he won’t wear a mask, they figure he knows what he’s talking about, they don’t need them either. He says some Nazis are good people, they take it. He says people are dying by isolating, they take that as truth too.
