Threats against hurricane emergency workers out of control on social media

If it hasn’t happened already. In between threats to aid workers, and the creation of paranoia around receiving aid, there’s a lot of different ways for people to die here. (And aid workers get it both ways - they’re not doing enough, but anything they do is also suspect.)

We’re at the point where conservatives fully inhabit different realities from the rest of us. (And even from each other, on some issues.) That won’t go away after this election, no matter who wins, unfortunately. The new (social) media environment, the hyper-partisan, right-wing disinformation “news outlets” will just make it all worse going forward.

We’re going to need some government intervention to fix things, but when almost half the population exists in a different reality, Republican participation in that process promises to just make things worse.

That’s true, and the fix will be long and ugly, but it starts with VOTE BLUE. Without that, nothing else matters. Detrumpification (although His Assholeness is a symptom, not the disease) will be a task years, if not generations, in length. And in large part, will be achieved by the old, angry white guys dying off and replaced by Gen Z and Gen Alpha who (I pray) will be better. But if we don’t win the fight in front of us, they won’t get the chance.

Trump and Vance are teaching us that the government cannot do anything except turn us against one another. They do so by spreading disinformation about critical matters like hurricanes, so that people despise and disrupt the government, the only institution that can help. This is impotence politics, and it leads to fascism.

… because it drives ‘engagement’ and engagement drives profit.

There is no moral capability here, only pure profit motive.

(Something, something … well-regulated markets. In my dreams.)

What number of threats against hurricane emergency workers on social media would count as “under control”?

I still have access via the Roku TV, but when using my laptop, MSNBC does not allow me to even watch their y00t00b videos, let alone comment.

MSNBC videos do not even appear in my yt history on the laptop, but they’re there on the TV.

Searches for any MSNBC vid on yt’s site yield no results when using the laptop. I can find their vids via Gogol searches, but clicking them gets me the usual redirect-to-yt’s-home-page BS. Copying the address on a Gogol results page is the only way I can get a postable link to an MSNBC video.

While I can search for & watch their vids on the TV, I cannot comment*, and have always got an error msg whenever I’ve tried reporting comments on any channel while watching via the TV.

Why all the fuckery?

I took it upon myself to report all the racist, misogynist, dis- and misinfo, hate-filled garbage, threats, spam, obvious bots, obvs russian and other types of

and just plain old lies I came across in MSNBC’s youtube videos’ comments.

I have been, as U see, quite vigorously punished for my trouble. It’s what happens when you try to do yt’s job for them on problematic channels. It evidently creates more work than they are willing to perform, so troublemakers like me are punished.

While there are a lot of anonymous ‘single use only’ bots and the like, which is a whack-a-mole situation, most of the really bad shit’s posted by the same weird

jerks on every vid.

The majority of those responsible for the profoundly garbage comments I reported are still there. I see their smelly so-called thoughts when I visit the comments on Roku, to upvote the righteous, and downvote the merkin von bankrupt-flavored assholes & the bot, etc farmhands.

*I haven’t tried signing into yt on the Roku w/my BF’s phone to make comments on any channel’s vids. I also figure if I did, MSNBC would block me on the TV as well! I just sign into yt the regular way w/Roku.

I don’t get it. We all know that the far right is rising across the world, but this self-destructive insanity streak seems to be unique to the US. I have no problem imagining a hardcore AfD or Fidesz or Vox voter accepting help from the government in a disaster event like this. They might laugh about how they forced the idiots to help them despite despising them or complain how the government isn’t doing enough, but they wouldn’t endanger themselves by attacking aid workers like this.

I wonder if he’ll do that before or after he unveils his health plan details.

“The nine most terrifying words in the English language are ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.'"
-President Ronnie Raygun, 1986

Most of these people have been told their entire lives that the government is the enemy that steals from them to give what’s rightfully theirs to the minorities and commies. This is the continuation of decades of deeply ingrained, anti-government and anti-mutual aid propaganda

Sadly, the rise of social media and AI have provided anti-government folks with the tools to spread their conspiracy theories and haterade to much larger groups of people. As they showed with anti-vaxxers, it only took a few dedicated people online to create a deadly misinformation campaign.

Now, the followers of 45 spread whatever lies he and Vance choose to spew. I’m seeing their social media bs covered on the news in multiple countries in Europe as part of their election coverage.

LAKE LURE, N.C. — Federal emergency response personnel on Saturday had employees operating in hard-hit Rutherford County, N.C., stop working and move to a different area because of concerns over “armed militia” threatening government workers in the region, according to an email sent to federal agencies helping with response in the state.

They don’t. They also don’t have a huge disincentive to get rid of it, and people have good engagement numbers with content they hate.

As you said this is a dumb timeline. One where it is a valid hope not that people that run social media companies will decide to avoid toxicity so they don’t contribute to both the death of innocent people but also social order, but that once it happens some lawsuit against them will land in front of a jury that doesn’t give a crap about how technically difficult it is to do, doesn’t care that it might be the new “public square”, and does care that someone died and awards a staggeringly large damages value and an ever larger punitive value. Enough so that the rest of the social media companies worry about bankruptcy.

Of corse that leaves X out in the cold since Leon won’t think it can happen to him, and nobody else has the power at that company to make him…but we can hope that specifically is the company that takes the hit so the other learn the lesson.

Yep, stupid cursed timeline, but not entirely without hope!
