Today in transphobia (Part 1)

If I lived there, I’d do some beer drinking the night before while eating pickled eggs. Maybe even some baked beans. Then I’d go to the statehouse and linger next to that public bench for hours. :man_shrugging:

Or - a bunch of people get there earlier than them.

Maybe shoot spitballs.

It burns me that older women, who could be fearlessly on the side of justice, are wasting their lives sitting on their rumps to keep someone from being able to do their best work in public service. Oh, so brave. Oh, so patriotic.

Understatement.

I don’t think a lot of people realize just how rough those lunch counter sit ins got… Especially the first few days, when it was just a few people doing it. I know you know, but many people do not… It took bravery to undertake such a thing, and I’m gonna say the same about Rep. Zephry. Sure it’s a bunch of old women, but that crowd can easily grow, especially if she defends herself in anyway. The right wing depends on violence being viral and working against people operating in good faith. Then pointing to the “chaos of the masses” as an excuse.

Indeed I do, sadly.

My heart goes out to Rep Zephry.

I still have not had a chance to go to the Center for Civil and Human rights in town, but Fiona did back in HS, and one of the things they have is a replica of a lunch counter where you put on headphones, sit on a stool, and can hear the racist crowd behind you…

Me too. It seems to me, in all of this with people getting thrown out for standing up for what’s right, the Democrats (generally speaking) don’t seem to be doing enough to support their representatives who are being targeted. It seems like every single republican controlled legislature should be seeing these kinds of protests from large swaths of their Democratic members… of course then they’ll just get thrown out, and the GOP can do what they want, I guess?

I don’t know… I appreciate what she and others are doing to try and turn the tide… I wish I felt like more of the Democratic party was in emergency mode over this stuff…

Thing is, in those supermajority leges, they can do what they want anyway. We need to have people standing up and getting fucking expelled. It elevated the folks in question to a larger stage than they ever would have had previously. I guess the dems from not-yet-targeted demographics just don’t see that? It’s one of the very few ways to make the repubs pay for what they are doing, IMHO.

I agree, but the Democratic party leadership still seems determined to play it safe, even in places with these super-majorities.

I think that may be it…

Fortunately- she was smart and called the police to let them know that she might be swatted when this started up. They called her after the swatting call to ask if she was okay & there was no action. It could have gone very badly if she hadn’t.

I just saw her on tv discussing this. She did very well.

I hope they catch the perp & prosecute to the fullest extent.

I’m very much glad she’s OK.

FTA: “Right-wing trolls, including those with Twitter’s new blue checkmarks and strong online followings, questioned whether the attempted SWATting incidents actually happened, claiming it appeared that they weren’t true.”

Assholes.

I’m sure they called the police and asked for a copy of the call log. Shitweasels.

This shouldn’t effect airports. They have to operate under the federal Title VI regs and Biden executive order.

Doesn’t mean that they won’t try & it’ll have to be litigated.
