Speaking of real advocates for women:
Is this emma-inception?
Emception
Aye; she knows first hand what itâs like to be oppressed yet as soon as she gets some privilege, she turns around and supports the oppression of other marginalized people.
Sheâs a hypocrite, and while I wonât get rid of my Harry Potter books that I already have, I wonât ever again support her work going forward.
She got millions of kids to read. I used to think she was a positive influence because of that.
While we all know the stories of how JK was poor and on welfare- it was for a very short period of her life. Her father was a Rolls Royce aircraft engineer and mother a science tech. She grew up here.
She famously wrote often in a cafe. But the cafe was owned by her brother in law.
She was solidly middle class.
She was working as a researcher and bilingual administrative assistant for Amnesty International while conceiving the Potterverse.
Apparently, not a particularly good researcher.
Right? Thatâs the infuriating part here.
And there it is⊠She clearly learned nothing from her days at AI. Depressing.
This is why a good understanding of intersectionality matters.
Going back at least as far as Mary Shelley, who published the first edition of Frankenstein anonymously in 1818 to make it more marketable.
And Rowlings with her transphobia makes a mockery of all the great women that contributed to sci-fi/fantasy despite the struggle to be taken seriously.
But as @KathyPartdeux, it maybe shouldnât be so surprising, as sheâs a woman of privilege, so it really shouldnât be a shock that she punches down once sheâs made her bones. Itâs still depressing, though. My daughter grew up with the Harry Potter books. Sheâs pretty disappointed in Rowlingâs behavior here.
Gloves off, JezebelâŠ
I donât know about this. I get the point, but Iâm not sure misgendering Rowlingâs the right way to go⊠especially when there are so many other ways to criticize a Feminism-Appropriating Reactionary Transphobe.
Yeah, I agree with you. I donât know either. I think the goal is to point out how she is misgendering people in her language and how trans people are often regularly misgendered on a regular basis by our society.
I have a quibble with the author. â If he, as a multimillionaire authorâ
JK is a billionaire.
Good man!
Good for Daniel!
Now Iâm only horrified that heâs 30
Jesus.
Police in St. Paul, Minn. are urging a 21-year-old transgender woman who was attacked and beaten on June 1 by more than dozen men at a St. Paul convenience store that was captured on video to report the incident to police, who are eager to apprehend the attackers.
