Today in transphobia (Part 1)

Lawmakers in Hungary on Tuesday approved a bill that would prevent transgender and intersex people in the country from legally changing their gender.

The Associated Press reported the proposal passed in the Hungarian Parliament by a 133-57 vote margin with the support of members of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party.

The proposal is part of an omnibus bill that Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén introduced on March 31. The Hungarian Parliament the day before approved a controversial measure that gave Orbán even more power under the guise of combating the coronavirus pandemic in the country.

Sex work or starvation. In a pandemic. In a country with the highest murder rate of trans people in the world

Orban is what Trump dreams of becoming. And that is terrifying.

Cross posted in misogyny.

This may effect many trans women- the health effects of stopping treatment can be serious.

Betsy Devos is using the Department of Education Office of Civil Rights to deny civil rights to transgender students. Not surprised, she is probably one of the most evil of Trump allies and one positioned to inflict a lot of pain and damage. She is literally the fox guarding the hen house. We need to kick them out in November.

Here we go again:

Though honestly, I could have also posted to the misogyny thread as well, since Rowling’s also insulted the many ciswomen who for whatever reason don’t menstruate, are infertile, or have needed to have hysterectomies.

There is so much more to being a woman than our body parts. But some people, like Rowling, would rather embrace ignorance and reduce everyone to biology-- which is incredibly anti-feminist.

Tl;dr: Trans rights are human rights, trans women are women, and J.K. Rowling is a TERF, and a tone-deaf one at that, for tweeting this during Pride month.

The initial “you mean ‘women’?” tweet was the kind of comment many a person might make in a moment of carelessness but the fact that she doubled down on it after getting called out instead of taking the opportunity to reflect and learn from the situation is all kinds of gross and stupid.

Isn’t she the author who went by J. K. Rowling in order to make readers believe she was male?

To be fair, she was told that she would not be taken seriously if she published with a recognizable feminine name. Same for NK Jemisin [ETA: correcting spelling error] and many other women in sci-fi/fantasy (DC Fontana, James Tiptree Jr, etc. etc, etc).

She’s being a transphobic asshole, which is entirely unacceptable, but that doesn’t mean women writing in what is considered a “mans” field don’t face discrimination themselves. If anything, it makes it MORE infuriating for her to say these hateful things. She’s punching down is what she’s doing and that’s what should be at focus here, not whether she did what many other women have done in order to be taken seriously.

I hear what you’re saying. My point is that you’d think she would be more understanding, with that supposition supported by her portrayals of how ‘otherness’ is unfairly treated (at least in the Potter movies). In other words… she confuses me.

Whenever I see an author with two initials, I automatically assume they are female.

But I agree, this makes it worse. She admits there’s a problem and then heaps even more crap on top of it.

She’s not, and that’s what matters here.
