They should really have included Cantor’s statements about pedophilia. Yuck.
In any sufficiently large group of humans, some will be assholes. There are a hell of a lot of physicians. These are the ones that prove the point.
I’m not trans or any marginalized group at all. But if this guy had said this to my mother?
But, like x100.
It’s starting to feel like there will be nowhere to escape to
The reactionaries and fascists haven’t realised they are opening their own Pandora’s Box.
If our existence becomes illegal then there is no point in following the law when we fight back. What can they do to us that is worse than what they already have planned?
The potential consequences horrifies me, but I never asked for any of this.
We’re moving from mutual aid to mutual self defense.
Taking a page out of the antiabortion playbook. Use vague language and threats of harsh penalties, so no one can say just what the law really is. Make it too dangerous and uncertain and you scare away the providers.
I think it’s safe to scratch the “may”.
Well, Newsome lives up to his reputation as having no actual policies, just whatever he thinks will get him elected.
That makes him much easier to write off as a future Dem presidential candidate.
Can they override his veto in California legislature?
I read that they are 4 votes short of overriding the veto, but that was a comment in the thread i got the article from, so
So enraging… So much for the Democrats giving a shit about human rights… or at least some of them…
Head up! There are important nuances to what is happening in Canada:
-
The Conservative Party has suggested adding anti-trans things to their platform. In Canada that is not an official thing and has nothing to do with laws, policy, or governance. It is up to the Prime Minister and their cabinet to decide if they support those things. Poilievre (the presumed conservative Prime Minister if elected) is walking a line and not embracing those ideas because he knows it wouldn’t fly in Canada. He’s not a good guy, but he’s been swinging hard back to centre as he realizes he might actually have a chance at an election.
-
The counter protests in Canada are consistently larger than the anti-trans protests in every town and city. The people do not support this rhetoric and will not vote for it. Conservatives have not rigged the game here to pass laws nobody wants, as they have in the US.
-
The anti-trans policies we do have currently are very light and widely opposed. We have two provinces who’ve decided kids can’t use different pronouns at school without telling their parents. Still wrong and must be reversed, but a far far cry from the laws being made in other countries.
-
BC just put out a very strong statement against the recent protests, making clear in no uncertain terms that trans rights are not negotiable.
All this to say, while Canada is having our own trans backlash, it’s honestly pretty minor (so far) and we won’t have far to come back from when this backlash is over (and it will end, just like all the others did).
