Today's mass shootings

spring break needs to just… break up. nothing good comes from this influx of rowdies and bad actors.

curfew, closed bars, closed liquor stores may be a start but we all know nothing will change until the goddamn guns are addressed unflinchingly.
No. Fucking. Guns. full stop.

Thank you, Rosanne Cash. A bit of brutal sanity here:

This is exhausting. The shitty arguments used to push for a terrible world are quite tiring.

Taking everything about today’s shooting at face value: the shooter was a trans man, etc. …

Every year since the start of 2020, there have been over 600 mass shootings in the US. Every damn year.

Estimates vary on what percentage of the general population is trans, but around 0.5% seems middle-most estimate of the world trans population. Roughly the same world percentage as redheads or Jewish people. So say “0.5% trans” for the US.

0.5% of 600 is 3.

By those numbers, you’d expect around three mass shootings per year by trans folk since the start of 2020.

That hasn’t happened.

So either

  • there are way fewer trans folk in the US than we thought (I don’t believe this; social pressure usually makes people under-report these numbers). or
  • trans folks are no more likely, and possibly less likely, to engage in a mass shooting than the average American.

(edit: clarity)

not quite

In a December hearing on the constitutionality of California’s ban on large-capacity magazines, Judge Benitez — an appointee of former President George W. Bush who has repeatedly ruled against gun restrictions — said he saw no need for well-known historians. “We’re not looking for truffles,” the judge said, adding: “The history and tradition is what it is.”

And gun rights experts contend that history does not belong to academics alone. Ms. Hlebinsky said in an interview that gun collectors, in particular, have done “a lot of research” that courts should consider, even though “you don’t have the peer review system within the academic university structures.” Her own neutrality recently was questioned in a Rhode Island gun law ruling by a federal judge who was appointed by a Democrat.

God might have something to do with these shootings, after all. Turns out when you concentrate the most repressed, gun-worshipping God-botherers in one place, people get violent!

yeah. with one murder isn’t really the goal. maybe money or whatever is. this stuff is murder for no reason at all. something that couldn’t happen without all of these guns.
