Came to +1 Shin Godzilla. Great looking film.

They may have taken a little break but so far Toho has made 32 Godzilla films since 1954, so an average of almost one every 2 years.

The Legendary Godzilla movies get a bad rap, I think. Overall, they feel to me like “what if the Heisei-era Godzilla movies had a Hollywood budget?”- totally in keeping with the vibe of the 90’s Toho flicks. Shin Godzilla was a wonderful and amazing movie, but feels like an experimental outlier to me. The Legendary movies (with the possible exception of 2014, and including the Kong stuff) feel more in line with the bulk of Toho’s output. And Dougherty’s King of the Monsters is a flat out masterpiece of the Zillaverse, poor reviews be damned.

I would love if we could have a direct sequel to Shin Godzilla, but it doesn’t sound like that’s the case and it’s clear it would be a very, very different film if it did happen. I’m hoping that they at least hire another director who wants to put his own stamp on the film, since that’s what helped make Shin so great.
