Tom Hayden endorses Hillary Clinton

I agree. Which is why I think the lesser of two evils shouldn’t be the default choice whenever people panic and that voters in a fucked up two party system with an FPTP electoral college shouldn’t try to “vote strategically”- which is a meaningless concept a lot of the time.

Am I the only one who thinks this guy looks like Dustin Hoffman?

Hillary is a nasty, conservative, corporate war hawk… even Hayden acknowledges it and talks of “we’ll just have to go protest to try to avoid the Iran war she’ll bring.” What the ever living fuck? Did the prior protests work against the prior wars? Voting Obama over her, and Obama over McCain is what avoided an Iran war. Voting Bernie over her and Bernie over whichever shit nugget the GOP offers will be the way to avoid that war for the next 4-8 years. There’s a lot of money in the wars, for entities that pay good money for their shitty candidates. Frankly, Trump is much less likely to jump onto a disastrous war than Clinton, and I’ll show up to vote for him if she gets the democrat nomination. YIP YIP motherfucker.

If I was a betting man I’d take the long odds and start seeing how well the Democratic candidates poll against Romney.

Assuming they get away with a fist fight. Lot of people want to come to that convention armed.

That’s what you get when you have a two party system, I guess.

It doesn’t have to be actual new stuff. When Trump brings up Benghazi, the average voter will say to himself, “Again? You’d think she would have learned from that first Benghazi mistake!”

Tom Hayden has lived long enough to enjoy hearing virtually the same arguments that he used against Michael Harrington used against Tom Hayden.

Let’s hope and plan so we won’t have to watch again what both of them watched happen to the left in 1968.

And what about 1938 and 1918?

While I agree he’s more isolationist, his bombast makes it likely that he won’t so much jump into a disastrous war as much as comically trip over the dog into one with his pants around his ankles and a bagel in his mouth while flailing madly.

Many politicians are far too eager to jump into disastrous wars with America’s enemies, but Trump strikes me as the kind of leader who would trigger wars with America’s allies.

I still trust me. But, I would advise: don’t trust anyone.

I think on some level there is a generational divide - those that still remember McGovern and the failed struggle for the Equal Rights Amendment are much more likely to support Hillary - and the status quo - over Bernie. I think Hayden falls into this camp.

On the other side you have the people who are more motivated by the Clinton Administration (for better or worse), Bosnian sniper fire, Iraq War vote and Snowden.

I agree. Watching a genuine progressive sidelined in favor of an “electable” candidate, who was then thoroughly trounced, was painful; let’s not do that again!

Totally looks like Adam Sandler in a wig.

Just jumped in here to say two things: (1) This guy seems to be positively tying himself in knots in order to say what he’s saying here. Marxist false consciousness maybe? :eyeglasses: And (2), this, right here folks, is the problem with identity politics:

I intend to vote for Hillary Clinton in the California primary for one fundamental reason. It has to do with race. […] My wife is a descendant of the Oglala Sioux, and my whole family is inter-racial.

And I have been so tied to the women’s movement that I cannot imagine scoffing at the chance to vote for a woman president.

I think these are what most people would view as “Run that up the flagpole and see who salutes” kinds of arguments. For example, if the author is so concerned about racial stuff, he might critique Bernie Sanders on e.g. Native American rights (cf. Bernie Sanders on Native American Rights) and compare and contrast HRC on substantive issues in this area. That could be interesting. As for the woman-for-president issue, would he be saying the same thing if Sarah Palin was running?

:eyeglasses: : “Ideology is a process accomplished by the so-called thinker. Consciously, it is true, but with a false consciousness. The real motive forces impelling him remain unknown to him; otherwise it simply would not be an ideological process. Hence he imagines false or apparent motives.”

According to Hayden’s Wiki page, he said: “We need to withdraw our stamp of approval and our tax dollars from supporting the occupation” [of Iraq].

How is supporting Clinton, who DID support the war in Iraq (among other wars) ‘withdrawing’ his support for the war?

How is supporting Clinton “Where possible, the peace movement should challenge the “peace credentials” of the otherwise-liberals by threatening or actually running candidates against them.”?

How is supporting Clinton presenting a unified front against Donald Trump when Sanders consistently out-polls Clinton when considered against Trump?

It’s more like the present-day Hayden has become “the compromised second draft” of the Port Huron Statement.

Edited to add: To roughly quote a university prof, who when told by a colleague that his lecture was excellent but “maybe it’s a bit above the students’ heads”, replied: Sometimes, you have to aim for where their heads should be rather than where they are now. “Sometimes, I aim for where their heads should be.”

Edited, 'cuz I just remembered the quote.

How many protests have there been against Obama’s wars, as compared to Bush’s?

With the exceptions of Israel and South Korea, most of our allies have reduced their military forces to Duchy of Grand Fenwick levels, so probably fighting a war with them would be much safer for the US.

It sounds like you found a candidate whose views align with your views perfectly. Congratulations! I have yet to find one and I suspect Hayden hasn’t either.

Let’s don’t do glib mischaracterization of our dissenting allies.

Young white male leftists in a hurry can make mistakes — like anyone.

In that capacity, Tom Hayden arguably helped accelerate destabilizing white boy trends in SDS. He rejected a sitting president who signed the culminating legislative achievement of the civil rights movement.

He helped attack the candidate who introduced the civil rights plank to the dem platform in 1948. The war did not end, and the worst, most predictable tactical mistakes of the “old left” were repeated.

And socialist feminist women in their own socialist movement were sidelined along the way.

Now, years after Nixon and Reagan, Tom Hayden urges more dem consideration of hard won cultural bonds with POC and women generally? It’s a good point.

And a contested GOP convention may not produce the most racist lunatic — or the most evangelical champion of intolerant male dominon — as its nominee.

Why are women and POC and women generally more trusting of Hilz than the dem socialists? Many formed their political alliances in the bad old days of the last 30 years. Does she seem like more of a tested fighter?

I don’t think it’s a good or respectful idea to summarily discount those opinions. Esp. if we’re card-carrying democratic socialists and not one of the other, less tolerant varieties.

I think Tom Hayden expressed his concern about solidarity with dem POC and women in good faith. The opinion deserves a civil, charitable hearing on the merits.
