Had to hop over the fence

Christ, what an asshole.

The fences usually have a purpose. When I worked for museums this kind of behavior made my blood boil.

It is located at the limit of the watershed: the waters of the Nozon flow in both the North Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. The point of separation of the waters, an ancient deviation created by man, was named “the Middle of the world”

That’s actually the coolest part to me. Headwaters of both the North Sea AND the Mediterranean? Because they purposely diverted it to feed both directions? In the 1200’s? That’s cool.

showing his body nibbled by frogs, snakes, and worms

Who do I blame, artists? Theologians? What kind of person makes it through life, especially in the middle ages, without knowing that frogs and snakes are almost fundamentally defined by their inability to chew on carrion. But also, who in the middle ages hadn’t seen a corpse decompose? Spoiler, no worms either: maggots and beetles.

I thought this was going to be another cautionary tale about global warming and rising sea levels.

Fair princesses kiss frogs, frogs kiss corpses.

The same people who gave babies the heads of old men, and who decided that great men had tiny junk. In other words, it’s an artistic conceit.

Had to look twice. Are there frogs eating his genetalia? What kind of demon frogs did they have in that area? File under “Hell No!”

It’s probably meant to be a type of memento mori: Even a king will be eaten by these small creatures.

Funerary art showing the putrefecation of the corpse was indeed trendy once upon a time for precisely that reason. As for why frogs in particular, I would guess Revelation 16:13: “And I saw three foul spirits like frogs coming from the mouth of the dragon”. Snakes and frogs may not actually eat corpses but they are symbolically associated with evil in medieval Christianity.

The mouths don’t appear to be doing any eating. I believe the frogs sexually violating the corpse.
