I just rewatched the original (1936) Flash Gordon serial, where the lizard monsters are obviously actual lizards with stuff glued to their backs then filmed in slow motion. Harryhausen’s stop motion looks far more real, though some of the fight choreography is clearly a call back to the Mongo lizards.
