Oh for sure that dog was in danger. It sounds like he was talking up this dog being able to take care of himself, but dude, large hooved mammals will destroy your dog. As the lady said, the fight off wolves.

Apparently, a hybrid of the Labrador Retriever and the Golden Retriever; and a washout from the Guide Dogs For The Blind Programme. Some dogs are just too doggie.
Not herding then; just chasing. And a herder would have been slewing from side to side, to herd them together, rather than just running at them.
