Trace the evolution of high heels across 100 years

Was it just me, or did those shoes not fit the models in a bunch of shots? Also, the 2010s heels were way too moderate, with like one exception. For a while there, I gave up buying shoes because it was either ballet slippers or 5" heels, minimum.

Apparently what comes next is a pair of Crocs designed by Freeman Dyson.

Srsly people, it’s not that hard to design a great pair of heels. All you need is an ergonomic grip…

Some of the shoes were a little too big. They were vintage; I assume when they found a pair they really wanted to use, a little big was close enough.

For the really early shoes, it looks like they also used vintage (or vintage-style) non-stretchy stockings. Nice touch

I think you’re right about the 2010s shoes; so many of the heels right now are so high I would literally be unable to walk. I got a pair with 4" heels on eBay once, for fun, and I couldn’t walk down even a slight incline.

I would wear every one of those, if I could. Stupid bunions  I didn’t wear high heels that much when I didn’t have bad feet, but now I really have to save them for special occasions.

That is a very genuine, nice compliment.

This reminds me, I need to get some new shoes. As a Bigfoot I tend to grind shoes down fast, I look fetching in something with a heel, and I usually have to order them online. I don’t know how anyone wears a tall multi inch heel, but two inches feels nice for me.

Heh, I’ll stop after this one.

A three inch Mary Jane with a chunky heel looks amazing. And speaking of uncomfortable clothing, I love tweed (duh), I think corsets are gorgeous, non elastic stockings are better, non elastic men’s socks (with a garter of course) are better, and I’ll buy anyone a pint or a cup of tea I see wearing a pair of Wellington’s or a sun hat.

I’m usually dressed down, but I enjoy fashion.

What’cha talkin’ 'bout? Silk-lined quality tweed is fabulously comfortable, so warm and overwinter-y…sigh

Those are amazing. I instantly thought of the chains on tanker trucks, used to discharge static electricity.

That looks like a nightmare to walk in

No different to any other high heels, then. TBH, I’m not sure what’s heavier with these, the shoes or the symbolism.

I got a yuuge soft-spot for that art/fashion crossover, where something that’s already impractical is given a nudge over the edge into totally unusable. And I reckon if you just reduced the number of chains and made them a little thinner, these might even be wearable. Well, as wearable as heels get, anyway.

“I hate those shoes!”

“Shoes?”

For those who did not know, Kanye West has a fashion line (actually, apparently two fashion lines). At a recent runway show of his in NYC, several of the models had difficulty walking in their shoes, to the point where one took them off halfway down the runway and another had to be helped off the runway because the heel actually broke while she was walking. At the point when runway models can’t walk in them either, I think we’ve hit late stage stiletto heelism.

They just don’t know how to properly construct a pair of shoes. The problem is well explained in this documentary.

For some reason I’ve always found high heels to be decidedly unsexy.

Maybe because you’re not a sadist?

Get with the program, women are to be looked at, not empathized with!

I’m glad it’s not just me…

They’re intensely ugly things IMHO*, would gladly burn every example of the things given the opportunity ^^

*saying that as a male, the gender that is somehow supposed to consider them ‘sexy’…
