Trailer for Pee-wee's Big Holiday

Highly unlikely, as this seems to be a retcon, ignoring everything that happened in the first 2 movies.

Also Midnight Madness, although IIRC, Reubens as Pee Wee sometimes wore a similar outfit

Let’s not forget his appearance on 30 Rock:

Without my looking to see if Burton’s on record about that, this is more than likely just a consequence of the pan-and-scan (SD) era rather than something he intended.

Movies shot on film are/were often shot on a standard (eg 4:3) frame, with the expectation that anything out of the intended widescreen frame would be matted out. The final version should look like the above cropped gif.

During the VHS/DVD era, movie studios had to choose what to do to to make “fullscreen” movies (since some people felt “cheated” by the black bars on “widescreen” releases). Sometimes, they would pan-and-scan across the widescreen final. Other times, if possible, they would just remove the widescreen matte and use the full image.

What you’re seeing here is the latter. (I’m partly judging this on the waviness of the gif - it looks like it’s VHS-sourced.) Removing the matte would mean that objects not intended to be seen were then visible. More often that not, boom mics and lighting equipment. Here, the reveal of the joke.

It’s funny on its own, but I doubt Burton had any intention of that being seen. But I’m sure there are a lot of folks who grew up seeing this movie on cable that saw it this way, and assume it was supposed to be seen.

Wasn’t he found guilty of masturbation? I dunno if we should be promoting movies by masturbators.

Also, wasn’t that Tyler Durden in the beginning? “How much can you know about yourself if you’ve never been in a fight?”

Holy crap, he was in Mork and Mindy. Maybe he was cursed to walk the Earth forever.

hmm…

this used to come on cable a lot when I lived with my grandparents, but I never saw this scene. should i rewatch it? it seemed pretty bad.

oph! how could I have forgotten!

hmm… it’s possible. I remembered this similar shot that I thought would back me up but it seems to re-inforce your point.

I think it works either way since it’s comedy, it’s Pee Wee. The comments section is divided, but you raise a good point. dammit, I thought it was a joke! In my head, it will always be. in my heeeeeaaaad!

If anything ever happens to Pee-Wee, Atticus Shaffer can take over.

not a retcon – i read somewhere that the idea is that each movie is its own separate universe. they have similarities, because it’s pee wee and reubens’ vision, but their stories are separate.

My spouse just said “Look up Pandemonium. He plays a mountie or something.”

Close. He plays a deputy, apparently.

I kinda wanna see it!

That’s the first time I’ve heard it claimed that Big Top Pee-wee wasn’t a sequel to Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. In fact, if you Google “big top pee wee not a sequel”, all you get are hundreds of links to sites that refer to it as a sequel.

the trailer looks great, pee wee looks great, but funny is hard. i hope the movie is funny or at least as entertaining as “big adventure”.
