Trump acquitted again

Yes. Their bluffs must be called. Every time. Let them show their true colours at every opportunity. Do not let them merely talk about how they might show their true colours, make them show them.

I fear we will soon witness the start of a “soft succession” among some
red state goverments. Expect movements to expel from the party all those who
voted to convict. The 45 percent who are forever for 45 now dominate the Republican
party. Before Dems and libs celebrate, understand that the armed and motivated are
willing to do direct actions again~

This. This all day. If you don’t understand the reasoning behind the constitution and laws and you act on that lack, you definitely need to be made an example of and warning against this type of small brain, dipshittery.

And I’m not a proponent of harsh penalties to send a message: that unjustifiably penalizes someone for committing the first or most visible crime, but this needs to be shut down.

There was hard evidence, it just didn’t matter to the vast majority of Republican senators, and was never going to. Nothing was. It was worth the fight just to make them show their chicken shit asses, hut they were never voting to convict.

Liberal democracy is going to collapse in this country in the near future. The left has no power so instead of socialism we’re going to get fascism.

We can likely not change them. I think that realistically the best we can do is divide them. If they are fighting each other, then they are less of a threat to the rest of us. But as we’ve seen with Tea Party asshats and the Trump Cult, when they unite, we are completely fucked.

That’s what was so weird. Even with a pathologically narcissistic a-hole of a President who demonstrated daily how crude, incompetent, inept, ignorant, and dangerous to the country he was… it took a pandemic and his adjectly self-destructive egoistic behavior (both over the course of his administration and during his reelection campaign) to defeat him, and it was still a very close call.

All it will take for the next demagogue to get (re)elected is just: the smallest concession to the blue states, not being an a-hole, paying lip service. (Oh, and if there is an epidemic, just do the minimum and don’t hide under a rock and pretend its going to go away). That’s all Trump had to do!

Well, I suppose that was expected. Still, a sad day, even by the standard of kangaroo courts and fake trials: not very often do people vote in favour of those who were going to string them up. Really sorry for the US, you are not going to enjoy what comes next. All you can do is wait for the solución biologica (as the Cubans did, not that it helped much).

I’m picturing Trump running for prez again in a couple years and all the older Republicans putting their heads in their hands going “Christ, not again.” Aquitting him damages their party as much as impeaching him. Trump isn’t the problem. The party itself is the problem. Trump is the poisonous mushroom that grew in the mounds of shit Republicans fling. They built this and now they can’t escape it.

the republican party is the natural home of needy amin. the wonder is not that 43 republican senators voted to acquit, the wonder is that 7 voted to convict.

although, if you get some context it becomes easier to understand. after all, burr and toomey had previously announced their retirement after their current terms expire while sasse, collins, and cassidy don’t face re-election until 2026, murkowski won her seat despite losing the republican primary in alaska, and romney, well, mitt “yolo” romney seems to actually have principles that aren’t based on anything but his morality.

Romney is also representing Utah, the red state where Il Douche seems to have the least influence. Also, he’s got the mormon-representing-mormons angle. This isn’t going to cause him any issues in the next election. Which is 4 years out, IIRC.

I was desperately trying not to look at the news, but this asshole’s flippant disregard for democracy has ruined my valentine’s day.

I now have to figure out how to be happy today for my girlfriend so she isn’t affected by my reaction to this. I did the wrong thing reading the news.

Democracy died today. McConnell using his own delay of the trial as an excuse for the defense, then blaming trump for it all after voting to acquit him, there are no words for the evil of that man and his party.

I now definitely consider all who support them monsters.

After that evidence and looking the other way, they are nothing but monsters. I don’t see them as human beings any more.

Party system and impeachment system are in opposition. There’s a solution to the risk of poor monarchs but it’s one America won’t accept: make the position ceremonial and move to a Parliamentary system.

Are you serious? There were hours and hours of video and audio recordings of Trump inciting his followers to this kind of action, both during the insurrection itself and for the months leading up to it. It would be like if the Nixon tapes had been broadcast live over the radio.

The outcome of the Senate trial had fuck-all to do with the evidence against Trump.

Trump could have killed a few senators and the vp, on tape, with his own hands, and they’d still acquit him by saying they shouldn’t impeach and convict a former president. That is what they would do. There is no low too low and never was.

Well, if he killed Republican senators …

um, no, if he personally, with his own hands, killed a majority of the Republicans in the Senate …
