I can’t believe I’m still naive enough to be slightly surprised.
Of course, Georgia also gave us Marjorie Taylor Greene, so…
It didn’t use to be like this
Fox and Sinclair exist because of policy decisions
They’re not mysterious natural disasters like blizzards or earthquakes
PA is a state with about 55% Democrats. And yet, Republicans “control” the house and Senate by large margins, due to gerrymandering and voter suppression.
It was one of the few places where the Post Offices allowed Trump’s goons to come in and clear out ballot drop boxes before being counted.
Does that make us a blue state or a red state?
Depends who you ask, I guess.
But my ballot was never counted, and I don’t see how it’s getting fixed any time soon. That’s why I roll my eyes when I see the ads telling me “this is the most important election” blah blah blah.
If the goal was to undermine faith in voting, the US Mail, and Democracy in general, the mission was accomplished.
McCarthy begged him to stop it. Begged.
Apparently not loyal enough. See Team America.
Nah. If this wasn’t over the line, then I am pretty sure there was no line. Fox and newsmax and oann and the rest would have still blamed Pelosi and the Democrats and celebrated if she had been assassinated. The same spin that stopped this vote would have stopped any vote.
The base they are playing to wanted the violent overthrow of democracy, and the reason it didn’t happen is Il Douche is a useless shitbag who didn’t have the wherewithal to organize a real coup. That’s literally the only thing that saved us.
We aren’t going to have a country if there aren’t consequences.
Can’t build it into the next budget bill?
I like this approach, but it’s not that simple. You create a list of brands to avoid, it becomes a list of focus for others. Unless the brands are headed by people who are interested in what we believe is the right thing, it’s pretty much for naught. Wasn’t there previously a list of Trump donors that circulated 4 years ago? How are those businesses doing?
Didn’t use the safe word.
What we learned is that less than 2/3rd of Senators respect the Constitution, democracy, and the rule of law. Even persuasive arguments had little sway in a party-first system.
I do worry what happens when we like Presidents, Police, and others continue to get away with criminal behavior. A lot of our system is designed around having a civilized group of people make judgements and determine punishments instead of letting an angry mob seek out revenge at every slight. If Congress stops doing their job, we’ll eventually backslide away from civilized behavior and back into the old ways of doing things. Violence is completely unnecessary and undesirable, and it makes me sick just to think of it. But violence eventually comes if you let it though a lack of vigilance.
I think there are sections of US society that are seeing what you describe in the rear-view mirror.
Three things:
- Then fucking let them. This is too important for us to give in to blackmail
- Then fucking let them. I’m sure the American people will be oh-so-happy with them if they filibuster much-needed COVID relief and cause more deaths
- Do you really believe they won’t just do it anyway if they have any inclination to do so? This is an empty threat - they’ll either still do it if they want to, or they wouldn’t do it anyway because they didn’t. They’re a bunch of fucking liars and have gone back on their word every single time, so there’s no point in basing your actions on anything they say they will or will not do.
I’ve been following this closely from across the pond and it seems to me that the American political system is seriously broken, with too many existing loopholes that can be used to stymie procedures that would otherwise make obviously guilty people accountable for their sins. Not to put too fine a point on it, Trump is a menace to all humanity and, even though he is no longer president, he and the snivelling and crawling wretches in the treacherous Republican party who acquitted him will forever be crowing about the alleged witch hunt failing. Of course it was a witch hunt - Donald Trump IS the witch, without a shadow of doubt, and needs to be put away for a very long time. Perhaps the ongoing criminal investigations will prevail and he will get his just desserts. The whole thing has been a farce from beginning to end, with many Republican politicians looking after their own interests, with very few having the integrity to do the right thing. The public now need to do what they did for Biden - vote with their feet and oust these non-patriotic representatives at the earliest opportunity.
Attach a funding provision to it and reconciliation will work.
If there’s one thing we know about the Republicans, it’s that those 7 have just signaled the end of their political careers. The party will lurch even further to the right and oust them. Same thing happened when the tea party took hold and relatively moderate GOP politicians were run out of town and replaced by asses like Ted Cruz. Far from a split, I expect a wholesale adoption of Trumpism going forward, because the base is so ill informed about reality now they have no choice but to run with it.
From what I’ve heard, neither Murkowski nor Romney is in any real danger of being ousted and replaced, and for Collins, this probably improves her chances of holding her seat the next election. The rest, you are probably right about, though.
That’s not how businesses respond to bad PR, though. Like, Disney will cancel shows that offend the religious right or progressives; they want everyone as a customer. And we’ve seen that it’s quite easy to pressure companies to stop advertising on Tucker Carlson, for example. I gather that show still struggles to sell advertising.
A campaign against Republican donors would probably lead a lot of companies to stop political contributions to both parties (as some did after the January 6 terror attacks), but that’s fine by me. The point is, this alone wouldn’t fix America, but it would influence Mitch McConnell, without requiring any cooperation from Republican voters.
