Trump commutes Roger Stone's prison sentence

Also September.

“We got Stone out of the prison inside a body bag, as suggested, Mr President. Who’da guessed those things were air-tight?”

I repeat myself: Trump is the proverbial bus.

This argument can be used for any excessive power, though. “I love it when I agree with the decision”

The whole point of the American system (I used to think) is that it diffuses power so that it can’t be abused. Any excessive power always will be sooner or later. Here we are with this particular one.

The pardon power was always a bit excessive, but it was kept in check by norms and customs of the office. Like everything else, Cheeto gives no fucks.

True - I don’t think many are paying attention to the difference.

Pardon grants immunity and nullification of 5th Ammendment rights, Commutation of Sentence does not.

In other words if trump Pardoned Stone then Stone could be compelled to testify and incriminate trump, because he can not self-incriminate when he is pardoned.

So now Stone can continue to stone-wall and not rat out trump.

I heard Stone wanted a commuted sentence and not a pardon because he thinks it makes him more macho.

Well the obvious thing is that it nicely enrages his opponents and (for a while at least) gets everyone focussed and talking about something of Trump’s choosing rather than corona virus and how ineffective Trump is.

Was thinking same thing lately.

All they seemed to do was make it REALLY OBVIOUS that they were perverting natural rule of law any way they could to get their scummy friend outta jail.

Didn’t matter how much they broke the DOJ, ruined peoples careers, or who they slandered, so long as this crooked buggywhip maker looking motherf*cker got out of jail

His intent from the start. This is why Stone always had that stupid little worry free grin on his face.

Let’s not descend into conspiracy theories like the other side tends to. They have amply proven that they can get away with anything through pardons and other ways of perverting the course of justice. So no need for assassinations.

The Real Estate Swindler is a sickness unto himself. That he was elected and still occupies the office is our country’s shame.

Also, neocon Bill Kristol helped grease the skids for us to be in this situation and is definitely not blameless.

Oh yeah, no doubt, he’s a scumbag overall. It’s interesting and a bit heartening, though, that more and more otherwise staunch conservatives like him have been turning against Trump.

Trump did not pardon Stone. He commuted Stone’s sentence. Stone is still a convicted felon on multiple counts. The commutation allows him to keep his 5th Amendment right not to answer questions that might incriminate him. Were he pardoned he would have lost that right when it came to answering the same questions that got him his convictions.
This way he can’t be forced to answer and incriminate Trump.

Yeah, I hear you. It’s like, I applaud the effort of “The Lincoln Project”, but in no way forgive the douchebaggery of every single one of them. The enemy of my enemy is often not my friend.

Look at this banana republic. Just look.

Just. Look at it.
