This has always made sense, since from the start of the history, the conquerors and invaders and colonialists have never been an uniform mass of badness; some have always been more tolerable than others, and sometimes massively so. (See also, anyone unfortunate enough to be conquered by Assyrians.)

What troops are there to pull out?
I actually really appreciate this. When Trump said that Obama founded ISIS, Fox and friends were there to defend him. People who supported Trump always complained that those of us who like truth are overly obsessed with the meanings of words that he says. Stop taking him so literally, we’re told.
Of course “refounded ISIS” doesn’t make any damn sense for more reasons that I can count. But the words aren’t supposed to make more sense than the nonsense they call back to.

I suspect Trump is deeply compromised by Russia, likely just banal corruption on a massive scale - money laundering, sketchy real estate, etc. etc. At some point Putin or a proxy showed or implied to Trump the detail and scope of the compromising evidence they have on him - which is damning, serious and true enough that Trump is shitting his pants about Putin releasing it into the wild.
This isn’t Le Carre stuff, just extortion on a large scale. Trump and his gang have been engaging with corrupt people and activities so long without consequence they just assumed that would continue. How many billionaires have ever gone to prison in the US?
