They did hold a referendum. And no one has disputed the results of the referendum. The population of Crimea is overwhelmingly ethnic Russian.
Silly. The Russians didnt need to take Crimea back cos their naval base was not threatened until the coup. The coup was not a legal act either.
They held the base at Sebastopol on a long lease. A bit like Guantanamo only they didnt force the Ukrainians to sign the lease.

the whole mess left next to no uninvolved party - the assessment may be correct*, but the EU had and has own political goals in the Ukraine.
as the OSCE mission is massively hindered by both sides of the conflict we need a more robust mediator, something like peacekeeping forces from the AU
