You have got to be freakin’ kidding me (my daily mantra for the last four years).
Royalty free pardon pandering.
Somebody call Ecuador because we want all of our SBA coins back!
In future news, Trump pardons Edward Snowden and Michael Flynn.
There were members of a group called the “Susan B. Anthony List” present. This is an anti-choice organization. (FWIW, there’s no evidence that SBA was anti-choice.)
Oh, and if in the wake you this you hear morons asserting that SBA was anti-choice, start here:
Nixon wasn’t convicted of any crimes either but Ford was still able to give him a Presidential pardon.
I knew he’d find a way to make something that was merely an eye-roller into something truly disgusting.
Not going to bother trying to convince those morons otherwise. He’s targetting this at marks who’ll take him at his word no matter what.
I have to admit, this is a better choice than just about any of the folks that most of us were suspecting he would pardon. It may be a naked attempt on the part of Trump to gain political points, and I don’t give him any credit for doing it for the right reasons, but I don’t think most of us would be offended if another president made this posthumous pardon.
The problem is, it’s an empty attention-seeking gesture except for the opportunity it gives him to pander to anti-choicers. That “President” Grab-Her-By-the-P*ssy is doing this is exactly what makes it offensive in and of itself.
Maybe he decided to pardon another long-dead celebrity who was obviously railroaded by an unjust court system, like that time he tried to convince everyone he’s not racist by issuing a posthumous pardon to former heavyweight champion Jack Johnson.
ETA: Yeah, Susan B. Anthony fits that pattern. “See, I support chicks and voting and stuff!”
Well yes, of course I agree with all that. Like I said, I don’t think he did it for the right reason. But I still think it was a better choice than some of the people we thought he’d pick.
Agreed. I’m just not going to give him credit for clearing a bar that’s buried 6 feet under ground (to be clear, I don’t think you are, either).
Speaking of pardoning dead people, my guess was going to be a posthumous pardon for his old running buddy Epstein.
Yeah it was already called but, he didn’t pardon Stone. He commuted his sentence.
This was done instead of pardon for various legal reasons that would discourage Stone from testifying against Trump.
Pardoning for theatrics is an abuse of office and a farce of justice, in other words perfectly normal behavior for Trump.
Give him credit? Certainly not. But I admit I don’t have the energy to get worked up and activity angry about this choice. And it’s been extremely rare over the last few years that he’s done anything that didn’t make me angry.
(I haven’t dug into the details yet of how he’s using Anthony’s legacy to push an anti-choice agenda so the anger may still be forthcoming.)
I mean, maybe Trump is too far under my skin, but this seems like a purposeful bait-and-switch of the kind that totally works on MSM outlets. Get them to speculate on what corrupt, self-serving pardon he’ll make, then when he does a surprisingly positive (though not particularly difficult, brave or original) thing, he and his troll army get to watch them trip over themselves to sheepishly make up for being naughty and assuming the worst of people, which they promised their Hot Yoga guru they weren’t going to do this year.
As @d_r pointed out above, the president of this anti-choice organisation was present at the pardon ceremony:
Anti-choicers really do love their bait-and-switch scams.
Ugh, what a cynical, dick move. (So no surprise in that sense.)
I guess he’s still grasping after that white suburban women vote.
“It is by my order and for the good of the state that the bearer of this has done what he has done.”
