And here, in this very first paragraph of the declaration, is the assertion of the natural right of all to the ballot; for, how can “the consent of the governed” be given, if the right to vote be denied. Again:
“That whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it, and to institute a new government, laying its foundations on such principles, and organizing its powers in such forms as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness.”
Surely, the right of the whole people to vote is here clearly implied. For however destructive in their happiness this government might become, a disfranchised class could neither alter nor abolish it, nor institute a new one, except by the old brute force method of insurrection and rebellion."
well, SBA. i am sure she is looking down and now can be (eternally) grateful. ok then ladies, NOW you know how to vote. and don’t forget to send your thank you messages to beloved leader.
In the back of my.mind I thought of Jeanette Rankin last night, but she merely voted against war twice, I don’tthink she was ever arrested.
This will backfire. She’s a symbol of voting, just like John Lewis. Vote early, vote often (that’s a joke the second part, I don’t want my words turned into a Trump tweet as proof of voter fraud).
Finally, proof that Trump respects women! Thank you for such a consequential parson! /s
It’s not the pardon that’s offensive, it’s the naked politicization and showmanship behind it. He even announced in advance he was doing it to drum up media attention. As always it’s about him - the other person is a merely prop.
Was she arrested on Federal charges? Sounds like she was arrested on State charges (she was arrested in Rochester, NY, and AFAIK, prior to the 19th Amendment, women’s suffrage was on a state by state basis). If so, he doesn’t have the authority to pardon her, not that this was anything more than crass pandering, anyway.
My bet is that “very, very important person” means “I have no one in mind, but I need to distract from the Dems in the news, and this is be best way I can think of so I’ll make a big deal of it, and have my underlings find someone unimportant later”
I don’t think he was considering her voting rights side. He was pandering to the anti-abortion fundies. Never quite certain how SBA became associated with them, though. @anon61221983, is there actually any reason for this?
This… the Susan B. Anthony list is a pretty well known anti-choice group…
And I think @knoxblox is right about that as well…
@anon29537550 from what I remember, she was anti-abortion, but in the same way that Margaret Sanger was, in that it was unregulated and horribly dangerous at the time. I do think it was in the context of women have greater control over their bodies overall. It was a larger set of issues that feminists at the time were arguing and fighting for that probably don’t equate directly to issues today.
Whether or not she’d agree with the current wave of anti-choice activists, I got no idea. I doubt it, though. They are pretty anti-choice and anti-woman’s liberation. But I can’t put words in her mouth like these folks do.
Pardoning him would also be a fuck you to the left as he went to the gallows rather than write a letter to the governor asking for his sentence to be commuted, as doing so would be an admission of guilt (the same as a pardon).
Right? He wouldn’t though, since Trump’s on about violent anarchists right now… and who is more of a posterchild for violent anarchists than Albert Parsons! And I doubt he knows who he is, anyway…
