The problem with Huntsman wasnāt just that Romney already had the billionaire Mormon ex-governor spot on the ballot lined up, it was that he thought that being rich and having serious credentials meant that he would be allowed to actually make independent decisions about policy, while Romney had agreed to play the Party Machine games.
I thought Huntsman was way too conservative, but he appeared to be an honest guy who generally believed what he said, unlike most of the other Republicans (Ron Paul was also that way, but he was far too radical for either party to allow him to get anywhere.)

unfortunately trump is now ahead of jeb bush by 4 points to lead in the latest national poll. he likely isnāt going to win in either iowa or new hampshire but he is a shoe-in for making the cut in any debates they have. this also indicates to me that the republican base is both angry and as bat-shit crazy as the donald. none of this gives me any comfort at all.

That should tell us all something about the state of politics today. The fact that the republicans have yet to put up a series candidate, the closest being Bush, and the fact that one who is clearly a joke is getting so far ahead, should worry us all. Especiallly considering everything going on in the world.
That being said, both sides are playing to their base right now, and in republican land, that means the deep right wing, which is becoming increasingly scary by the year. But it also means that if they do pick him, there is no way in hell any moderate, sane republican would vote for him, or that any conservative democrat might vote for him either. If they put him up, they will be shooting themselves in the foot.
I dunnoā¦ Vote for Bernie? He might literally be the only sane, non-oligarch-backed candidate in the raceā¦

Yeah, despite being brash, clumsy, too direct (they prefer dog whistles) and basically not politically savvy, Trump is just the unvarnished Republican candidate - the racism, stupidity and personal wealth as qualification for his policies makes him the epitome of the modern Republican candidate. This isnāt news to me, given past (and other current) candidates. But itās also the reason why the Republican party is declining in this country.
