Which is frankly terrifying and people that don’t think it is haven’t been paying attention.
I still hear some folks say “soft authoritarianism” won’t be so bad. You’ll still get TV sitcoms, you’ll still get movies, there’s still going to be food at the grocery store. Won’t be so bad, as long as you’re white.
But they’re not going for soft authoritarianism. The base wants atrocities coast to coast, every Republican politician is now at least as bloodthirsty as the base, and they’re all dedicated to turning America into a dystopia overnight.
Or they don’t believe they are in the crosshairs, and don’t care about the people who are…
Those folks need to fuck right off. The right amount of authoritarianism is always zero.
“I’ll take Fascist Misnomers for $500, please.”
“They never challenged that, they’ve never challenged it. It’s an amazing thing. They wouldn’t challenge it. If I said anything slightly wrong, they challenge, but they can’t challenge that.”
You can always tell when trumpy goes off script… Coherent statement, coherent statement, coherent statement, bumbling self congratulatory incomplete sentences about “enemies”, coherent statement…
I have to say, his delivery, for him, was pretty polished. He must have been practicing. I’m sure he has, that’s the only kind of stuff he’s been saying for a while now, right? And what we’ll be hearing for the next two years.
Despite great outside dangers, our biggest threat remains the sick, sinister, and evil people from within our country. You know who I’m talking about.
Yes, I do. I’m not sure YOU know who you’re talking about, though.
Before my kids were born he was at most, and at best, a punch line as far as I could tell.
ETA:
That time frame partially precedes 2008 but there’s this:
I do like rich people paying taxes though. That’s “authoritarianism” according to libertarians.
…Well, they’re “libertarians” according to themselves.
Modern libertarians are pro-authoritarian, at least by the post Ayn Randian definition…
Not so much a fascist speech as a guide to writing a fascist speech.
The problem with too many libertarians is: They warn the government not to tread on them, but completely ignore the power of corporations and the rich. Sure, they complain about them sometimes, but god forbid you want some government oversight or taxes on them.
It’s like they think government authoritarianism is the only form out there.
More accurately: “You keep using that word. I do not think it is actually a word.”
On another note, supposedly Trump is going to make a big announcement on the 15th. I hope some state AG or federal prosecutor trumps Trump’s trumpeting with an announcement of charges on the 14th.
yeah, but… both sides!!! /s
This Kim Stanley Robinson quote seems appropriate - “That’s libertarians for you, anarchists who want police protection from their slaves.”
They think that if people are equal in theory they are equal in practice. They ignore imbalances of power.
Poppycock!
