The US Attorney General is not under any obligation to “follow orders” of the president. He is obligated to run the DOJ in an independent manner.

But I was talking about the police / military / whoever they were that fired teargas and flashbangs into a peaceful protest before charging in with riot shields and batons.
Those orders should have been refused.
I don’t know how many of them were bound by the UCMJ, but it’s specifically covered that obeying an unlawful order is no defense.
If they were not bound by the UCMJ, they faced much lesser penalties for disobedience. They should have refused. Complaining “I would have been fired if I had not violated those people’s civil rights.” is the weakest of weak sauce.
Full disclosure: I served in the USAR as both officer and enlisted. I was never deployed, and I was only intermittently placed on active duty for various schools and training.

They were prison guards.
More specifically, at least some of them were riot teams from the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
People who have special training, indoctrination, and aptitude for breaking up prison riots. It’s no wonder they didn’t hesitate to carry out their orders.
That was the weapon that was knowingly and deliberately pointed at peaceful protesters in Lafayette Square so that ⊥rump could have a two-minute, creepy-as-fuck, staged photo-op.
Fucking prison guards, sicced on citizens responsibly exercising their rights as enumerated in the first amendment to the US Constitution.
This isn’t a slide toward dictatorship, we’ve arrived.
