I have no problem with pornhub, but there are a good bit of people under 18 on tumblr. This would push a lot of people off the platform that have no other real options.

If ever I feel an errant ray of cheer I can just remember that the people who bought tumblr, removed the porn; and attempted to resell it were almost certainly granted bonuses well in excess of my net worth, quite possibly my lifetime earnings, for such leadership and vision.
Seriously, how do people land these ‘make hideous mistakes’ gigs?

Not really. While New Coke did backfire at first, reintroducing old Coke proved to be an ad bonanza. Turns out Coke was losing market to Pepsi. It developed New Coke and it tested extremely well. Then the admen fucked it all up. So when old Coke was reintroduced, it made literal news, with one broadcaster actually breaking into ongoing TV to announce it. Mucho free advertising. So much so, you’d think it was planned, but I don’t think they were that smart.

Our intrepid young exec quickly skulks out of the office and converts his stock to dollars before reaching the elevator. As he descends to his floor a high thin wail emanates from the top floor… Meanwhile, another little brown kid dies of dysentery in some “piece of shit” country.
Welll - I am not suggesting it ALL goes to porn. It was tounge in cheek, just meant for it to go back to what it was before.
My wonder if the reason for the nudity ban was that the sale was already being planned, and they wanted to make it more desirable to a future buyer - while killing off part of its base.

Hmm. I think I posted on the wrong Tumblr being sold thread…
Anyway, I’d bet fairly serious money that it was an attempt to maintain advertisers. Tumblr was already in trouble for being unable to stop child pornography, and advertisers (except for a tiny fraction) are very leery of being associated with regular pornography.
You can get away with NSFW if you are either small or “not known for NFSW”. As soon as your name is associated with NSFW content, you probably need to change your business model to charge customers directly.
