Another tl;dr could be that Erdogan relies upon the uninformed base, so he is not so much attacking those already on social media as trying to smear it so that as many Turkish voters remain uninformed as possible, by making all social media distrustful.
It’s still a short term game, as Turkey has a huge amount of expats and social media will still be the way families split between Turkey and Germany keep in touch, and that will still ripple through the society. Azerbaijan might get away with it due to a lower amount of expats and a more despotic starting point, but that doesn’t translate into success with its neighbour.
